Stop and Draw Objective Draw and label a main character in one of the books you’ve read together. Directions Provide a selection of drawing materials and paper. You may play this game like a version of Pictionary, where one player draws a character and the rest of the players try to guess who it is. Or, make it less competitive and have all campers draw and label the character of their choice. Have campers include images and words that represent the character’s personality, reactions to challenges, and other details including acts of courage, expressions of hope, kindness, friendship, and so on. Frozen in Rhyme Objective Make rhymes. Directions Campers play a game of freeze tag using rhyming words to become unfrozen. You may wish to set a timer for three minutes for each round. Go! Choose a camper or two to be “It.” “It” moves around the room trying to tag and freeze other campers (to tag, “It” should lightly touch a camper on the arm, shoulder, or back and say FREEZE). In the meantime, the rest of the campers move around the room trying to avoid being tagged. When campers are tagged, they become frozen. “It” continues trying to freeze other players. Meanwhile, other campers try to unfreeze frozen campers by standing in front of them and saying a word. The frozen camper must reply with a word that rhymes with the word said to them. (Note: Listen for rhyming words as players attempt to become unfrozen.) If they say a rhyming word, they become unfrozen. If not, they stay frozen until someone else comes along with another word and they can try again. The game ends when “It” freezes all campers or when you call time. The Last Letter Objective Use a given letter to name examples from a category. Directions Have campers sit in a circle. Choose a category, such as places (any category will work, such as book titles or characters, animals, school supplies, vehicles, etc.). The first player names an example of the category, such as school . The next player must name a place that begins with the last letter of the word school , such as library. Play continues around the circle until players can’t think of a word in the category that begins with the last letter of the previous word. In that case, you may choose a new category. If a player names something that both begins and ends with the last letter of the previous word, the direction of play switches. Go! Choose a category, then choose a player to begin the round. You may decide to allow other campers to offer hints if a player gets stuck.
