Comprehension There are multiple ways to assess campers’ reading comprehension: • Monitor understanding during “Go Deep” discussions following your read-alouds. • Confer with campers about their Bunk Time reading. • Review daily writing about reading activities. • Offer Think More book check-ins. These quizzes—both the teacher view with answers and the student view—are downloadable from the LitCamp website. There is a Think More quiz for every Read-Aloud and Text Set book in your collection. These comprehension checks assess key higher-order thinking skills. The LitCamp Rubric On the following pages, you will find the LitCamp rubric. You can use the rubric to evaluate campers’ personal growth and development through the lens of the 7 Strengths framework. Consider inviting campers to participate in this evaluation and invite conversations about how they are doing. These observational tools will enable you to evaluate important milestones on the developmental literacy continuum, including: • Engagement and enjoyment • Focus and stamina
• Comprehension and critical thinking • Collaboration and community building • Goal setting and self-reflection
LitCamper Notebooks Campers’ notebooks include writing pages for every lesson, including a page for jotting down what they may notice and wonder during the lesson, the decodable passage for fluency practice, the Writing Power graphic organizer or writing page, and a page for writing about the lesson strength. You may wish to collect campers’ notebooks at the end of each lesson to monitor their levels of engagement, writing development, and connections to the 7 Strengths.
