Before Reading Show the cover of the book and read the title and the names of the author and illustrator. Say: Today, we are going to read a book titled Pluto! Not a Planet? Not a Problem! What do you think this title means? Encourage campers to share their ideas about what the title means. Responses could include such ideas as Pluto isn’t a planet, but that’s okay. Say: What else do you notice about this cover? Campers might notice that Pluto is waving and smiling. Pluto is wearing a name tag that reads “Hello. I’m a Dwarf Planet.” Explain that a dwarf planet is a small planet. Ask: How might a dwarf planet be different from a regular planet?

MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Find a photo to illustrate what the solar system looks like. Discuss the meaning of the words solar , having to do with the sun, and system, a group of related objects. Explain that combined, “solar system” refers to a group of space objects surrounding the sun.

Then preview the book by showing campers the illustrations on the first few pages. Ask what they notice about the pictures. Guide campers to predict what the text will be about. Give them a moment to discuss, then invite several campers to share with the group.
