LitCamp Reimagined! | Grade 3 Leader Guide Green Bunk

Read the Book Read the entire book, pausing only for Drop-In Vocabulary. Make sure campers are following along in their own books as you read. Note Pluto! Not a Planet? Not a Problem! does not have numbers printed on the pages of the book. To help you navigate the text, count the first page of text, which begins, “Nice to meet you,” as page 1. You may wish to write page numbers in pencil at the bottom of each page. Read-Aloud Tips Use engaging read-aloud strategies, such as those below, to captivate your audience. • Use a playful character voice to represent Pluto, beginning on page 1 (“Nice to meet you. The name is Pluto.”). • Emphasize the words special on page 5 and me! on page 6. • Slow down your reading on page 18 (“I had to wait and wait and wait …”) but then speed it up starting on page 19 (“Best. Day. Ever!”). Notice & Wonder Invite campers to jot down or draw in their notebooks anything they noticed or wondered during today’s read-aloud. Get the Gist Invite campers to discuss with partners the gist, or main idea, of today’s read- aloud. Ask volunteers to share their gists with the group.

Campers should mention these details: Pluto is different from the other planets because it’s not as big or as close to the Sun. It took a long time for Pluto to be discovered. First it was a regular planet, then scientists studied it and decided it should be classified as a dwarf planet instead. Wrap up by reminding campers that in the next lesson, they will “Go Deep” in a discussion about the book. Campers should be ready to talk about the book and think about what questions they may have.
