WRITING POWER 25 MIN
Respond to Reading Make sure campers have their copies of Pluto! Not a Planet? Not a Problem! and their notebooks open to the graphic organizer for this lesson. Campers will revisit the book, focusing on the similarities and differences between planets and dwarf planets, and explore why Pluto’s status changed. They will use these details to prepare for a writing activity in the next lesson. Draw a Venn diagram on the board or on chart paper. (Refer to the graphic organizer for this lesson in the Graphic Organizers section.) As you guide campers to find details in the book, model filling in your Venn diagram while campers fill in their own.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Allow students to draw or use visual aids to express their ideas and understanding of Pluto’s characteristics and its classification. Encourage them to label their drawings with terms like “orbits around the Sun,” “does not clear its orbit,” and “is round” to reinforce the concepts.
Model In Pluto: Not a Planet? Not a Problem!, we learned about Pluto and its journey from regular planet to dwarf planet. What is the difference between a regular planet and a dwarf planet? Give campers a minute to talk to a partner and share their ideas with the group. Then say: We will reread parts of the book to look for details about Pluto’s characteristics and how they compare to the other planets. Read aloud from the page that begins, “Our solar system has eight planets.” What are some of the characteristics of planets? How is Pluto different? Give campers time to talk and share their thinking. We will use these details to fill in our Venn diagram. Model filling in the Venn diagram with one item for each category. Practice Have partners return to their books. Encourage them to work together to complete the rest of the Venn diagram using details found in the book. Point out that because Pluto is a dwarf planet, the “both” and “dwarf planet” characteristics describe it. Clarify Tell campers that in the next lesson, they will use the details they gathered in their notebooks to write about why Pluto is not a planet. CLOSING CAMPFIRE 15 MIN Reflection Question Have partners turn knee-to-knee and discuss this question. We’re going to build a wonderful community of readers and learners here at LitCamp. Why is it important to build a community? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
