Before Reading Have campers turn to partners and recap the previous lesson’s read-aloud, then have volunteers share with the group. Make sure they mention these key points: Pluto is different from the other planets because it’s not as big or as close to the Sun. It took a long time for Pluto to be discovered. Scientists first identified Pluto as a planet, but after further studies, they decided it was a dwarf planet. Note Pluto! Not a Planet? Not a Problem! does not have numbers printed on the pages of the book. To help you navigate the text, count the first page of text, which begins, “Nice to meet you,” as page 1. You may wish to write page numbers in pencil at the bottom of each page. Go Deep
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Use pictures to help illustrate the meanings of the words or act them out. For gaze , demonstrate gazing at an object. For original , show two versions of the same thing, and point out that the one that came first is the original. For space , show an image of the night sky with stars, planets, and a spaceship.
Let campers know that you’re going to discuss the book together. Reread the sections as indicated to provide context for the prompts. Make sure campers use evidence from the text in their answers. You may wish to have campers discuss their ideas with partners, then have volunteers share with the group. Open some questions to whole-group discussion. Encourage all campers to participate. Note that each discussion prompt is followed by possible responses. Pages 3–4 Reread the descriptions of the other planets in the solar system. What are the special characteristics of each of the eight planets? Possible responses: Mercury is fast. Venus is hot. Mars is red. Earth has ice cream and books. Jupiter is big. Saturn has rings. Uranus is sideways. Neptune is the last one.
