READ ALOUD: How You Got So Smart How You Got So Smart 35 MIN Introduce Vocabulary

To support comprehension, teach new vocabulary words before reading the book. Encourage campers to use the words in their discussions during the lesson.

WORDS TO KNOW

challenge: something that is difficult or different from what someone usually does

courageous: brave

review: to look at, read, or think about something again to understand it better

Before Reading Show the cover of the book and read the title and the name of the author. Read aloud the back cover. Explain the meaning of the phrase inner genius (the ways in which a person is naturally or uniquely intelligent and acquires knowledge by observing, asking questions, exploring, and trying things). Say: Campers, share one way you got so smart about something. For example, tell about something you are really interested in and know a lot about. What did you do to find out about it? What special techniques or skills did you use to learn more about the thing you’re super interested in and smart about? Give campers time to discuss. Today, we’re going to read about how one kid got so smart. As we read, notice what qualities or traits you might share with the boy in the story.

MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Help campers make personal connections to the vocabulary words. Use questions and prompts such as, What is a challenge you’ve had or faced recently? Tell a partner about a time when you had to be courageous. What are some things you have to review to understand them even better? Encourage campers to use vocabulary words as they share their experiences and ideas.
