READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skill Review

In this lesson, you will review the word-reading skill with campers. In the following lesson, campers will play a game to practice the skill, strengthen comprehension, and demonstrate understanding. Identify and Read Words with Closed Syllables Remind LitCampers that words are made up of parts called syllables . Say: Each syllable contains one vowel sound. Being able to identify different types of syllables can help you pronounce and read longer words. Display and read pencil . Point out that the vowel e is between consonants p and n . Say: Remember, when a vowel is closed by consonants, the vowel sound is usually short. Let’s blend the sounds in this syllable together: /p/ /e/ /n/ (slowly blend the sounds, exaggerating the sound of the short e, /e/), pen . A closed syllable ends with a consonant, and the vowel makes a short sound. Follow the same routine with the second syllable in pencil . Then run your hand under each syllable in pencil as you blend them to say the word. Repeat as necessary with other words ( rabbit, napkin, contest ). Review the words on the Closed-Syllable Word List.

Reading Fluency For the fluency practice, you may use the decodable passage and routines provided here or choose a passage from the book and the fluency routine that works best for your group.

MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Guide campers to notice the punctuation in the passage. Explain that readers take small pauses at commas and longer pauses at periods. Discuss and model how campers’ voices should change when a sentence ends in an exclamation point or a question mark.

All of a sudden, I am big! I am nine! But how did it happen? How do I know the things that I know? I ask questions. I get facts. I prod and inspect and invent. I make objects like rockets and magnets. I act brave. I fix complex problems. If things are hopeless, I get unstuck! I fix my mistakes. I finish a job. I have feelings. I know when I am upset, mad, glad, and thrilled.

I make friends. I tell them that I care. Look at me now! Are you impressed?
