READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skills in Action Campers will play a game to apply the skill reviewed in the previous lesson.
Going on a Picnic Objective Identify and read words with closed syllables.
Get Ready to Play Gather players together in a meeting area or circle. Goal Make the longest possible list of items (closed-syllable words) to take on a picnic. How to Play the Game 1. Remind players that the items they name must be closed-syllable words. They can use any words from the Closed-Syllable Word List. Encourage them to think of other words not on the list. 2. Start the game by saying: “I’m going on a picnic and I’m taking [insert a closed-syllable word]. Who else would like to go with me?” For example, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m taking a napkin. Who else would like to go with me?” 3. The next player says, “We’re going on a picnic and we’re taking a napkin and a rabbit. Who else would like to go with us?” 4. Play continues as campers recall the prior words and add their own. If someone forgets what is being taken, start over. If someone offers a word that doesn’t have a closed syllable, start over.
