READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skill Review

In this lesson, you will review a word-reading skill with campers. In the following lesson, campers will play a game to practice the skill, strengthen comprehension, and demonstrate understanding. Say and Spell Words with Closed Syllables Remind students that words are made up of parts called syllables. Say: Each syllable contains one vowel sound. Being able to identify different types of syllables can help you pronounce and read longer words. Display and read basket . Point out that the vowel a is between consonants b and s . Say: Remember, when a vowel is closed by consonants, the vowel sound is usually short. Let’s blend the sounds in this syllable together: /b/ /a/ /s/, bas . A closed syllable ends with a consonant, and the vowel makes a short sound. Follow the same routine with the second syllable in basket . Then run your hand under each syllable in basket as you blend the syllables to say the word. Repeat as necessary with other words (e.g., finish , magnet ).

BRING THE TEXT TO LIFE 20 MIN Reading Fluency For the fluency practice, you may use the decodable passage and routines provided here or choose a passage from the book and the fluency routine that works best for your group.

MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Review the passage and clarify any confusion. Highlight and explain the meaning of any words that might be unfamiliar, such as lifelong , insisted , and impact .

A dog and a cat made a lifelong bond. “How did it happen?” you ask. Bobbi, a dog, and Bob Cat, a cat, kept each other safe while they were homeless. “But Bob Cat cannot see! How did they survive?” Bobbi got skilled at telling Bob Cat where and when to go. He helped Bob Cat stay hidden. He helped Bob Cat get scraps of food and things to drink. He acted like a seeing-eye dog. Nice people helped the dog and cat and hoped to get them a home. They insisted that Bobbi and Bob Cat be together. They got them on TV! The dog and cat made a big impact. Hundreds of people asked to take them home! You might say, “Amazing!” You are right!
