WRITING POWER 25 MIN
Respond to Reading Make sure campers have their copies of Two Bobbies and their notebooks open to the graphic organizer for this lesson. Campers will revisit the book, finding evidence of the special bond between Bob Cat and Bobbi.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Allow campers to create drawings that give examples of how Bob Cat and Bobbi wanted to be together throughout the book. Visual aids can be helpful in prompting oral or written information in the future.
Draw a chart on the board or on chart paper. (Refer to the graphic organizer for this lesson in the Graphic Organizer section). As you guide campers to find evidence in the book, model filling in your chart while they fill in their own. Model Campers, today we read about a dog and a cat that survived Hurricane Katrina by forming a friendship and sticking together. We read about how they stayed together for many months, surviving on the streets without a home. Let’s look back in the book and see how they took care of each other before and after they were rescued. Read aloud the page that begins, “Winds roared...” What did Bob Cat do? Give campers time to discuss, then model filling in the evidence on the chart while campers write in their notebooks. Practice Have campers work with partners and continue to identify details that show the ways that the two animals helped and took care of each other. Have campers record their responses in the charts in their notebooks. When finished, invite volunteers to share the evidence they found. Clarify Remind campers that in the next lesson, they will use the details from their charts to answer the question: How can you tell that Bobbi and Bob Cat had a special bond? CLOSING CAMPFIRE 15 MIN Reflection Question Have partners turn knee-to-knee and discuss this question. What can Bob Cat and Bobbi’s story help us understand about friendship and why it is so important? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
