Before Reading Have campers turn to partners and recap the previous lesson’s read-aloud. Invite volunteers to share with the group. Make sure they mention these key points: When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Bobbi the dog and Bob Cat were left behind. They wandered around the city together for months until they were rescued and taken to a shelter. At the shelter, volunteers realized that Bob Cat was blind, and that Bobbi had been acting as his seeing-eye dog. Because of their attachment to each other, they were adopted together and welcomed into a new home. Note Two Bobbies does not include page numbers. To help

MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Get up and move! Pace back and forth and roam around the classroom, and have campers do it alongside you to reinforce the meanings of these words. Break longer words into syllables (including review words) to reinforce understanding of pronunciation and word parts.

you navigate the text, count the first page of text, which begins, “Neither Bobbi the dog nor Bob Cat has a tail,” as page 1. You may wish to write page numbers in pencil at the bottom of each page. Go Deep Let campers know that you’re going to discuss the book together. Reread the sections as indicated to provide context for the prompts. Make sure campers use evidence from the text in their answers. You may wish to have campers discuss their ideas with partners, then have volunteers share with the group. Open some questions to whole-group discussion. Encourage all campers to participate. Note that each discussion prompt is followed by possible responses. Page 4 Reread the page that begins, “Winds roared to 110 miles …” Why do you think Bob Cat and Bobbi were left behind? Possible responses: Their owners had to leave quickly and could not take them. Or their owners thought they would be coming back for them soon. Page 10 Reread the page that begins, “Month after month …” What do you think life was like for Bob Cat and Bobbi at this time? Possible responses: It was very difficult and dangerous. They had to find food somehow.
