SPOTLIGHT ON LANGUAGE On page 2, read the sentence that begins, “The city of New Orleans …” Explain that the words “mighty Mississippi” refer to the Mississippi River. The river has often been referred to this way because it is the largest and most important river in the United States. Point out that “mighty” means strong and powerful.

Possible responses: She might have been afraid that Rich might take Bob Cat away, or she was being protective of Bob Cat, who could not see where he was going or what was happening. Page 19 Reread the page that begins, “Bob Cat was blind!” Do you think Bobbi knew Bob Cat was blind? Possible responses: Bobbi knew that Bob Cat was always following her and may have figured out that he needed her help. She may not have known he was blind, but she did know that Bob Cat needed to be wherever she was. Page 23 Reread the page that begins, “The very next day …” Why do you think hundreds of people wanted to adopt Bob Cat and Bobbi after seeing them on television? Possible responses: People were so impressed by their story and how the animals had stayed together all those months and helped each other. The fact that Bob Cat was blind and Bobbi was her seeing-eye dog made them a very special animal team. Page 30 Show campers the photograph of Bobbi and Bob Cat. What do you notice about this photograph of a dog and cat? Why do you think this book was illustrated with pictures instead of photographs? Possible responses: They are the real Bobbi and Bob Cat (according to the caption). So much of the story took place before Bobbi and Bob Cat were found that there wouldn’t have been enough photographs to tell the story. Explore More If time allows, continue the discussion with these additional prompts. What do you think Bob Cat and Bobbi would say to each other if they could talk? What questions would you have for Bobbi and Bob Cat if you could ask them? Do you think Bobbi and Bob Cat would have survived alone?
