READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skills in Action Campers will play a game to apply the skill reviewed in the previous lesson. Closed-Syllable Space Alien Objective LitCampers spell and say words with closed syllables. Get Ready to Play This game can be played with the whole group or smaller groups. Goal The goal of this game is to correctly guess, spell, and read a word with closed syllables before the space alien is complete! In advance, determine how many features you need to add to the space alien to make it complete. How to Play the Game 1. Draw a space alien stick figure on paper or a whiteboard. Choose a word from the list. Next to the figure, make a dash for each letter in the word. 2. Invite players to guess one letter at a time. If a letter is in the word, mark it on the correct dash. If a letter is not in the word, draw one feature of a space alien (helmet, space suit, unusual facial features, boots, fingers, etc.). 3. You may want to invite players to choose words, draw the figure, and write the letters. 4. To win, players must correctly guess and read the word and identify the closed syllable(s) in the word.
