Before Reading Show the cover of the book and read the title and the names of the authors. Invite campers to look at the photos on the back cover. Note: In this book, Charlie, the narrator’s twin brother, has autism. Some campers may be sensitive about the topic of autism. You may wish to take a few minutes to introduce the story and its premise to campers. Campers, this book is about twins: a brother, Charlie, and his sister, Callie. The story is based on a real family. Twins are siblings who are born at nearly the same time. Some twins look alike and some don’t look alike at all. Some twins have traits in common, like being good at math or sports, and other twins don’t share much in common at all.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Find photos that show different sets of twins (twin brothers, twin sisters, and a brother and sister). Share the photos and write twins on the board. As you show each photo, say twins , and have campers repeat the word after you. Point out that sometimes twins look alike, and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes, twins have a lot in common, and sometimes they don’t.
Callie’s brother, Charlie, has a condition called autism. Autism affects different people in different ways. Some people with autism may have challenges with social skills or speech.
