WRITING POWER 25 MIN
Respond to Reading Make sure campers have their copies of My Brother Charlie and their notebooks open to the graphic organizer for this lesson.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Invite campers to tell you ways they show they love or care about someone. If they have difficulty saying the words in English, allow them to draw their ideas. Then help them write words to describe their picture.
Campers will revisit the book to find details about the way that Charlie shows his love for his family. Campers will use these details to write about Charlie in the next lesson. Draw a big heart diagram on the board or on chart paper. (Refer to the graphic organizer for this lesson in the Graphic Organizer section). As you guide campers to find details in the book, model filling in your heart diagram while campers fill in their own. Model In this story, twins Charlie and Callie are alike in many ways. But they express themselves differently. When they were little, Callie told their mother that she loved her, but Charlie didn’t say, “I love you.” Reread the sentence on page 11: “I have learned from Charlie that love doesn’t always come from what you say.” Guide campers to understand that Charlie shows his love in other ways. Say: Let’s find details in the story that tell how Charlie shows his love. Reread page 16. Ask: What is one way that Charlie shows his love? Guide campers to notice “He welcomes me with his smile.” and “He lets me touch his face.” Write both examples in your heart diagram as campers write in their notebooks. You may wish to model another example (see page 17), or have campers work with partners to complete their heart diagrams. Practice Campers, work with partners, and reread page 23. Find examples of how Charlie expresses his love, and write them in the heart diagram in your notebooks. When campers have finished, ask volunteers to share the details they found. Clarify Remind campers that in the next lesson, they will use the details they found to write about different ways to show someone you love them. CLOSING CAMPFIRE 15 MIN Reflection Question Have partners turn knee-to-knee and discuss this question. In My Brother Charlie , Callie and Charlie show kindness to one another in their own ways. What is one way that you have shown kindness to someone, or someone has shown kindness to you recently? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
