READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skills in Action Campers will play a game to apply the skill reviewed in the previous lesson. Open-Syllable Space Alien Game Objective Spell and say words with open-vowel syllables. Get Ready to Play This game can be played with the whole group or in small groups. Goal Correctly guess, spell, and read an open-syllable word before the leader (or whoever is drawing) completes the space alien (or scarecrow, or whatever figure you choose). Decide in advance how many features you’ll add to your figure to make it complete. How to Play the Game 1. Draw a stick figure on the board or on paper. Choose a word. Next to the figure, make one dash for each letter in the word. 2. Have players guess one letter at a time. If the letter is in the word, write it on its corresponding dash. If the letter is not in the word, add a feature to the figure (helmet, boots, hands, jet pack, antenna, etc.). 3. To win, a player must correctly guess and read the word and identify the open syllable(s) in the word before the figure is complete. 4. Play as many rounds as you like.
