WRITING POWER 25 MIN
Respond to Reading Have campers open their notebooks to the graphic organizer from the previous lesson. Explain that they will use the details they gathered to respond to the questions: How does Charlie show Callie that he loves her? How do you show special people that you love them? Model Remind campers what they did during the previous writing activity. In the previous lesson, you noticed some of the ways that Charlie expressed love to Callie. With a partner, review what you wrote in your heart diagram about how Charlie shows Callie that he loves her. Give campers a moment or two to review.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Invite campers to tell you a way that they have shown love, care, understanding, or kindness to someone else. Repeat what the campers tell you in English and confirm understanding. If timing permits, encourage them to illustrate their actions and guide them to write a sentence describing their pictures. You may wish to have them complete the following sentence frame: I show that I love someone by ___________ .
Practice You’re going to use the details you gathered in your heart diagram to help you complete or write your own sentence about how Charlie shows Callie that he loves her. Then you will write or complete a sentence about how you show special people that you love them. Write the following prompts and sentence frames on the board: How does Charlie show Callie that he loves her? Charlie shows Callie that he loves her by _____________________. How do you show special people that you love them? I show people that I love them by _____________________________.
Clarify Remind campers that understanding the characters in a story and making connections between a book and our own lives can help us understand the story more deeply.
CLOSING CAMPFIRE 15 MIN Reflection Question Have partners turn knee-to-knee and discuss this question. A community benefits when people are kind to one another. What are some ways that you can be kind to others with or without using words? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
