LitCamp Reimagined! | Grade 3 Leader Guide Green Bunk

Read-Aloud Tips Use engaging read-aloud strategies, such as those below, to captivate your audience. • Use different voices and expressions for each punctuation character. For Exclamation Mark, speak softly and hesitantly when he’s trying to fit in with the periods, and use a louder, energetic voice when he discovers his ability to exclaim. • When reading Question Mark’s rapid-fire questions, increase your pace and pitch. Then, dramatically pause before Exclamation Mark’s big “Stop!” moment to build tension and emphasize his breakthrough. Notice & Wonder Invite campers to jot down or draw in their notebooks anything they noticed or wondered during today’s read-aloud. Get the Gist Invite campers to discuss with partners the gist, or main idea, of today’s read- aloud. Ask volunteers to share their gists with the group. Campers should mention these details: Exclamation Mark feels sad because he doesn’t fit in with the periods. Then Question Mark helps him realize he can make loud, exciting sounds. He discovers that his unique qualities add something special to the world. Wrap up by reminding campers that in the next lesson, they will “Go Deep” in a discussion about the book. Campers should be ready to talk about the book and think about what questions they may have.
