Respond to Reading Make sure campers have their copies of Exclamation Mark and their notebooks open to the graphic organizer for this lesson. Campers will revisit the book, focusing on what the main character is like before he meets Question Mark, and what he’s like after.

MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Support campers in talking about character change. Explain any unfamiliar phrases or words used during the discussion. For example: Exclamation Mark tries to fit in. To “fit in” means to try to be like others.

Draw a chart on the board or on chart paper. (Refer to the graphic organizer for this lesson in the Graphic Organizers section.) As you guide campers to find details in the book, model filling in your chart while campers fill in their own. Model In many stories, the main character changes in some way. Often, they discover something new about themselves or the world around them. Think about how Exclamation Mark changes by the end of the story. First, let’s find details about how he feels and acts before meeting Question Mark. Reread pages 6–12, starting with “He tried everything . . .” and ending with “. . . running away.” Say: Exclamation Mark tries to fit in. He tries to be like the periods. Let’s add this detail to our chart. Have campers find other details and add them to your chart while campers write in their notebooks. Practice Have campers work with a partner to find details in the book that tell what Exclamation Mark is like after meeting Question Mark. Have them add these details to their charts in their notebooks. Clarify Tell campers that in the next lesson, they will use the details they found to write about how Exclamation Mark changed by the end of the story. CLOSING CAMPFIRE 15 MIN Reflection Question Have partners turn knee to knee and discuss this question. Why is it important to celebrate the special things that make each person different? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
