LitCamp Reimagined! | Grade 3 Leader Guide Green Bunk

READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skills in Action Today, campers will play a game that reinforces the word-reading skill.

Open- & Closed-Syllable Baseball Objective Identify words with open and closed syllables.

Get Ready to Play Print both word lists and use them to choose the words you’ll “pitch.” Make one corner of the room “home plate.” Then, in a diamond shape from right to left, identify first, second, and third bases. Divide players into two teams and have each team choose a name. Flip a coin to determine which team is up first. Goal Identify a word by its oral spelling and correctly say whether it has open or closed syllables. How to Play the Game 1. The first team lines up by home plate, while the other team sits in the “dugout” to check answers and keep score. The leader chooses and pitches a word to the batter by spelling it out. The batter says the word aloud and whether it has open or closed syllables. (Example: the leader spells P-E-N- C-I-L. The batter says, “Pencil! Closed syllable!”) 2. If the answer is correct, the batter gets a hit and goes to first base. If the answer is incorrect, it’s one “strike.” The batter has two more tries to get a right answer, and may consult with teammates. If the third try is incorrect, the batter strikes out and the next player is up. 3. As batters get hits, players move around the bases and score runs. After either three outs or a grand slam (four consecutive correct answers), the second team is up at bat, and the routine is repeated. 4. Play as many innings as you like (an inning is when both teams have a turn at bat). The team that scores the most runs wins the game.
