READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skill Review
In this lesson, you will review a word-reading skill with campers. Then, in the following lesson, campers will play a game to practice the skill, strengthen comprehension, and demonstrate understanding. Match Words with the Same Consonant - le Syllable Remind campers that words are made up of parts called syllables. Say: Each syllable in a word contains one vowel sound. Being able to identify different types of syllables can help you pronounce and read longer words. Display and read the word fable . Point out ble in the second syllable. Say: Remember, when a word ends with a consonant followed by the letters le , they stay together to form a syllable. Let’s divide the word into syllables: fa-ble, fable . Run your hand under each syllable as you blend the syllables to say the word. Repeat as necessary with other words ( handle , simple ).

Reading Fluency For the fluency practice, you may use the decodable passage and routines provided here or choose a passage from the book and the fluency routine that works best for your group. The man saw art in the simple things. He began by painting rectangles. Long rectangles. Tall rectangles. Rectangles within rectangles. Then he painted squares. Squares with all kinds of colors. He saw that the colors made some paintings happy and others quiet. It was like a puzzle! So he set out to study color. He started in the simplest way possible. He painted the colors side by side. He saw that colors don’t stand alone—they interact! The man gathered his findings in a book and gave it a title. This book changed how artists think about color.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Review the passage with campers and confirm comprehension. Model reading the passage aloud one line at a time and have campers read each line back to you. Gently correct any mispronunciations. As campers become more confident and fluent, encourage them to read the lines faster and with expression.
