FROM DAD TO ROLE MODEL THE POWERFUL INFLUENCE MY FATHER HAD ON MY LIFE

In December, we threw a retirement party for my dad, one of the most influential and important people in my life. It was a big occasion, and we tried to invite everyone who played a role in his career. We invited some of the vendors he worked with, past and current employees, other dry-cleaner owners, and our immediate family. My dad was under the impression that we were throwing our annual holiday party. He even picked up the food from Chicken Shack for the occasion without realizing there was way more

decisions in life. So, that’s exactly what I did. I went to college and then started working a mortgage banking job I absolutely hated. Around the same time, my dad had to let his production manager go, and he was planning to fill that role himself. My dad knew I wasn’t enjoying my work and invited me to straighten out the office while he focused on the production floor. I took my dad up on his offer and originally planned to become a route driver. My dad quickly realized he’d rather me learn the ropes than specific tasks. So, he made me the backup route driver so I could learn all the routes instead of just one. Eventually, he taught me how to run the production floor and how to treat people. These early lessons

food than usual! You could see the surprise on his face when he walked up those stairs and saw everyone ready to congratulate him. It was a moment I’ll never forget and a festive event for all. I’ve watched the video from the retirement party countless times since the celebration, and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. No doubt about it, my dad is awesome. He’s constantly supported, guided, and inspired my siblings and me. When I think back on it, my siblings and I were the focal points of my dad’s

were invaluable to my success, and I’m so thankful for them. My dad didn’t train me to be a dry cleaner but, instead, taught me to be a business owner.

I plan to take many of my father's lessons and pass them on to my children. I want my kids to go

life, and I don’t think he’d have it any other way. He’s been an excellent role model and showed me how to be the best father, husband, and person possible. That’s why I felt compelled to follow in his footsteps. My dad got into the dry-cleaning business because his dad was in the business. His family expected him to graduate high school and then immediately begin work. While my dad did go to Western Michigan, he still stuck to his parents’ wishes and started running the dry-cleaning business as the fourth-generation owner.

to college and choose their own life path, but the world has changed. Maybe we’ll go into business together or find a

different path that fits their needs and interests better.

I’m incredibly thankful for my wonderful father, who has been a role model for my entire life. Happy Father’s Day!

My Personal Odyssey Through Music THE BEAT GOES ON

Summer has finally arrived, and many of us will be going on weeklong excursions to the coast to get some much-needed rest and relaxation by the beach. For years, the beach has been one of the most popular summertime destinations for Americans, with millions of us flocking to the coast every year. If you’re planning to hit the sand this summer, you should prepare some exciting activities, so you and your family or travel partners can create memories that will last a lifetime. Master the Waves Ocean Activities the Entire Family Will Love

Music is a constant. We listen to it on our way to and from work and while we’re at the grocery store, and it even plays in the background while we work. We love certain songs, artists, and genres but can’t stand others — it’s personal. In June, we recognize World Day of Music, a great reason to explore our own musical journey. I’ve always felt drawn to music. I was in band when I was in school and learned to play the piano, but I would never classify myself as musical. I wanted to play but never felt good enough, regardless of how much practice I put in every day. I still developed a passion for music, though. I’ve always loved listening to music of all genres, and I never pass up an opportunity to listen to one of my favorites. When you’re a kid, you don’t have much exposure to music other than what your parents listened to, which usually seems old or boring. When I entered middle school, I discovered different types of music and instantly fell in love with many of Michael Jackson’s songs. My cousins teased me about it then, but I didn’t let it take away from my enjoyment. By age 16, I discovered my favorite band of all time, Linkin Park. I still love their music to this day and listen to it regularly. My music tastes didn’t just reflect the popular artists of the time. When I played piano in my youth, I loved playing classical pieces, and in college, I took a prerequisite class called the History of Music. That course required me to listen to different musical periods and helped me better appreciate and understand the classical genre. Recently, I’ve started listening to music from Hamilton. The music drew me in, and I was fascinated by the lyrics. I’ve also started listening to electronic and dance music more often, though I am selective. I connect with only some of the songs. I’ve enjoyed listening to music throughout my life, and now that my children are starting to get invested, I’m finding even more music I enjoy. If there’s a song or artist you think I should check out, let me know the next time you stop by.

Here are a few oceanside activities you’ll want to check out on your vacation.

EXPLORE THE DEPTHS BY SNORKELING. Many people want to try scuba diving while on vacation but don’t have the time, training, and finances required to go on an excursion. That being said, you can get pretty close to the scuba-diving experience by snorkeling. Using a snorkel in the ocean, especially in flat water, is a great way to explore the underwater world. You’ll be able to spot fish, crustaceans, and other sea life without needing extensive training. Those who regularly go snorkeling see it as a form of therapy that helps them relieve stress and anxiety. Feeling more relaxed and at peace will help make your vacation feel even more magical. GRAB A BOARD. If you want to experience something slightly more intense, you can try some of the many ocean activities involving a board. First-time ocean-goers will love using a boogie board or bodyboard to ride the waves into shore. Those who are more experienced may enjoy surfing for

the first time or renting a standing paddleboard. Many beaches on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts have paddleboard rentals or

surfing lessons. Be on the lookout at your vacation destination if you want to take advantage of these exciting activities.

TOUR THE OCEAN. You may want to get away from the beach and experience open waters

beyond the shore. If that’s the case, you’ll want to see if your vacation destination offers glass-bottom boat or submarine tours. Some beaches even have whale-watching adventures, which provide an excellent opportunity to see some of nature’s largest creatures in their natural habitat.

“I brought our daughter’s Marchesa wedding gown to Janet Davis for cleaning and preservation. Our

wedding planner suggested Janet Davis for this elaborate gown: He hadn’t steered us wrong

once — and this was no exception. It was clear the team at Janet Davis was very experienced in cleaning and caring for wedding gowns. They did not rush and they did a gorgeous job. I was kept in the loop as the job progressed; I was able to come in and inspect the gown before it was boxed up. Today, I picked up the carefully packed preservation box, including instructions for storing and what to do if someone wants to open the box to see the gown at some point. The staff is friendly and helpful. If I could give them more than four stars in this review, I would. Your wedding gown is in good hands with Janet Davis!”

4 A Furry Hero in Mexico

RESCUE DOG’S LEGACY LIVES ON How the World Fell for Frida

Dressed in protective goggles, blue booties, and a matching vest, this incredible rescue dog became a symbol of hope in Mexico. Frida, a cheerful yellow Labrador retriever, was a devoted member of the Mexican Navy known for her search and rescue skills. Trained to find people trapped under rubble after earthquakes, Frida always worked hard to save lives. Frida became a national hero when a devastating earthquake hit Mexico City in 2017. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake took more than 300 lives and injured many more. While sifting through dangerous debris and aftershocks, Frida saved 12 people after finding them alive while uncovering more than 40 bodies during her lifesaving career. While the nation was devastated by the disaster, this smiley rescue pup brought worldwide attention to the tragedy. Frida’s dedication (and impeccable style) quickly made her an internet celebrity, and soon, murals of the lifesaving canine graced the walls of Mexico City. Even Captain America, aka Chris Evans, gave Frida a shoutout on Twitter, adding, “What did we do to deserve dogs?”

The hero dog then traveled the world, helping countries

suffering from the aftermath of disastrous earthquakes. Frida saved lives in Haiti and Ecuador before retiring from her position in 2019 at 10 years

old to live the rest of her days in comfort and love. Sadly, the Mexican Navy announced Frida’s passing in November 2022 due to old age. She was 13 years old. In her honor, a magnificent bronze statue of Frida, clad in goggles and boots, stands in front of the Mexican Navy office in Mexico City. On the day of her death, the Mexican Navy changed their Twitter banner to an illustration of Frida and spread the hashtag "#HastaSiempreFrida." Frida will always be remembered for her lifesaving work and the hope she embodied for the entire world.
