My Personal Odyssey Through Music THE BEAT GOES ON
Summer has finally arrived, and many of us will be going on weeklong excursions to the coast to get some much-needed rest and relaxation by the beach. For years, the beach has been one of the most popular summertime destinations for Americans, with millions of us flocking to the coast every year. If you’re planning to hit the sand this summer, you should prepare some exciting activities, so you and your family or travel partners can create memories that will last a lifetime. Music is a constant. We listen to it on our way to and from work and while we’re at the grocery store, and it even plays in the background while we work. We love certain songs, artists, and genres but can’t stand others — it’s personal. In June, we recognize World Day of Music, a great reason to explore our own musical journey. I’ve always felt drawn to music. I was in band when I was in school and learned to play the piano, but I would never classify myself as musical. I wanted to play but never felt good enough, regardless of how much practice I put in every day. I still developed a passion for music, though. I’ve always loved listening to music of all genres, and I never pass up an opportunity to listen to one of my favorites. When you’re a kid, you don’t have much exposure to music other than what your parents listened to, which usually seems old or boring. When I entered middle school, I discovered different types of music and instantly fell in love with many of Michael Jackson’s songs. My cousins teased me about it then, but I didn’t let it take away from my enjoyment. By age 16, I discovered my favorite band of all time, Linkin Park. I still love their music to this day and listen to it regularly. My music tastes didn’t just reflect the popular artists of the time. When I played piano in my youth, I loved playing classical pieces, and in college, I took a prerequisite class called the History of Music. That course required me to listen to different musical periods and helped me better appreciate and understand the classical genre. Recently, I’ve started listening to music from Hamilton. The music drew me in, and I was fascinated by the lyrics. I’ve also started listening to electronic and dance music more often, though I am selective. I connect with only some of the songs. I’ve enjoyed listening to music throughout my life, and now that my children are starting to get invested, I’m finding even more music I enjoy. If there’s a song or artist you think I should check out, let me know the next time you stop by.
Here are a few oceanside activities you’ll want to check out on your vacation.
EXPLORE THE DEPTHS BY SNORKELING. Many people want to try scuba diving while on vacation but don’t have the time, training, and finances required to go on an excursion. That being said, you can get pretty close to the scuba-diving experience by snorkeling. Using a snorkel in the ocean, especially in flat water, is a great way to explore the underwater world. You’ll be able to spot fish, crustaceans, and other sea life without needing extensive training. Those who regularly go snorkeling see it as a form of therapy that helps them relieve stress and anxiety. Feeling more relaxed and at peace will help make your vacation feel even more magical. GRAB A BOARD. If you want to experience something slightly more intense, you can try some of the many ocean activities involving a board. First-time ocean-goers will love using a boogie board or bodyboard to ride the waves into shore. Those who are more experienced may enjoy surfing for
the first time or renting a standing paddleboard. Many beaches on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts have paddleboard rentals or
surfing lessons. Be on the lookout at your vacation destination if you want to take advantage of these exciting activities.
TOUR THE OCEAN. You may want to get away from the beach and experience open waters
beyond the shore. If that’s the case, you’ll want to see if your vacation destination offers glass-bottom boat or submarine tours. Some beaches even have whale-watching adventures, which provide an excellent opportunity to see some of nature’s largest creatures in their natural habitat.
