The promise was repeated (vs. 22, 23) with the additional provision of their possessing other nations greater and mightier than their own. This would’ be the state of Israel today had she fulfilled the conditions laid down by God. But alas, she is far from that state now. It is for other nations, including our own, to learn this lesson from Israel’s history. The force of two small words should be particularly n o t i c e d here, " if" and "then." It is as though the Lord were saying, "If ye w i l l . . . then I w ill...” The Lord speaks similarly to individu als and nations today. Furthermore, the promise was that the land which was given to the people of Israel (and which therefore is theirs, though at present they do not occupy it) would be t h e i r s experimentally (v. 24). Moreover, none would be able to stand before them or overcome them (v. 25), if God’s conditions were ful filled. For the enlightenment and in struction of all nations, Israel’s his tory is given to us. Let us profit by it. Points and Problems 1. "If ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments.. . I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain" (vs. 13, 14). Obedience is the way to blessing. God promised that if Israel would “ hearken diligently” to t h e Lord’s commandments, He would continue to send the early and the latter rains. Both of these rains were necessary to bountiful crops. The early rain, coming in the fa ll of the year after the hot summer months, prepared the soil for the reception of the seed; the latter rain, coming in the late spring shortly before the har vest, was essential to invigorate the ripening grain. The cessation of these rains due to Israel’s disobedience has shown how necessary they are to pro ductivity in Palestine. The Lord Jesus . taught us in the figure of the vine and the branches that the true secret of fruit-bearing is to abide in Christ, and the way to abide in Christ is to keepi His precious commandments (John 15:10). No Christian has any right to expect heaven’s blessing upon his life who deliberately disobeys the revealed w ill of God. 2. "Lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul" (v. 18). The main thing in the mind of God was that His people should make His Word the counsel of their lives. By it they were to guide their living. The thing, of supreme importance was that they should hide it away in their hearts to guard and keep them from sin (Psa. 119:11). As an aid to memory it seems that God provided for the wear ing of the actual Scriptures upon the

forehead and hands. The devout Jew offered a literal obedience. He dis played on forehead and left arm his phylacteries, small c a s e s containing scrolls of parchment on which were written the words of Exodus 13:1-16 and Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 11:13-21. The right-hand door post of his house bore a small metal case containing a piece of parchment inscribed w i t h these same scriptures from Deuteronomy. By the time of our Lord, .these aids to memory had become mere ornaments of display, worn “to be seen of men” (Matt. 23:5). How prone man is to take even the most sacred things and make of them mere matters of form! 3. "And thou shalt write them upon the doorposts of thine house" (v. 20). Every time the Israelite entered the door of his house he was to be re minded of his duty to God. It would be a fine thing if on the walls and . above the doors of every Christian home there were some neatly framed words of Scripture. They would be a continual reminder to those who live in the home of their responsibility, and they would afford a definite testi mony to every visitor. 4. “Then will the Lord drive out all these nations from before you" (v. 23). In remarkable ways God undertakes for a people or a nation whose heart is right. They who honor God’s Word w ill be honored of Him. The best armament for any people is an abiding faith in and adherence to the Bible. Only the people of such faith and practice can drive out the enemies of the soul and possess eternal riches. Golden Text Illustration P roverbs 14:34 A public utilities company, seeking a franchise in a large city, sent an unscrupulous representative to inter view a city official whose vote was sorely needed. When the official inti mated that his vote was not for sale, the representative exclaimed: “Think of the money! It’s the bargain of a lifetime.” “ Listen, friend!” replied the official. “No one ever yet got a bargain in sin. You tell me that all I have to do is to vote ‘right.’ That’s only the begin ning of what I’ll have to do. I’ll have to live with a remorseful conscience. I’ll have to pose before my wife and children as some one I know I am not. Don’t tell me it is- a bargain.” Sin is always a reproach unto any people. —Adapted from Forward.
