SHORT TERM BIBLE COURSES Offered in Fall of 1943

24. The Refiner “Take away the dross from the sil ver, and there shall come forth a ves sel for the finer” (Prov. 25:4). He will put His silver into the fire to purify it; but He sits by the furnace as a Refiner, to direct the process and to secure the end He has in view, that we may neither suffer too much nor suffer in vain.—John Newton. 25. Shut Up to Faith “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). ' - Are you in some g r e a t trouble? Have you had some great disappoint ment? Have you met some sorrow, some unspeakable loss? Are you in a hard place? Cheer up! You are shut up to faith. Commit your trouble to God. Praise Him that He maketh “ all things work together for good.” There w ill be blessings, help, and revelations of God that will come to you that never could otherwise have come; and many besides yourself w i l l receive light and blessing because you were shut up to faith.—C. H. D. 26. True Love “Delight thyself also in the Lord” (Psa. 37:4). I urge upon you communion with Christ, a growing communion. There are curtains to be drawn aside in Christ that we never saw, and new foldings of love in Him. I despair that . I shall ever 'vin to the far end of that love, there are so many plies in it. Therefore dig deep, and sweat and labor and take pains for Him, and set by as much time in the day for Him as you can. He will be won in the labor.—Samuel Rutherford. Extravagant Devotion “There came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake, the box, and poured it on his [Christ’s] head” (Mk. 14:3). Our Lord is carried beyond Himself with delight when He sees any of us doing what Mary did, extra-Aigantly wasting our substance for Him, not set for this or that economy, but being abandoned to Him. If I cannot exhibit the sentiment of the Holy Spirit in the sordid actualities of life and in doing menial things from the highest motive, I am not learning to pour out unto the Lord. It is time now to break the life, to cease craving for satisfac tion, and to spill the thing out. —Oswald Chambers. 28. Bitterness Made Sweet “And when thfy came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters 27.

of Marah, for they were bitter” (Ex. 15:23). , .God jiTected Moses to cast a tree into the bitter waters, whereby they were sweetened, so that the thirsty people could drink. The bitter waters of Marah were directly in the path of God’s people, and God himself was leading them. So in our paths through life there come the.Marah experiences —times of drastic testing and over whelming difficulty. Yet we continue to sing in faith, “He leadeth me.” He who brings us to those waters provides the tree to sweeten them, even the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. —Our Hope. 29. The Whosoever Way “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Rev. 22:17). Planned by Omnipotence alone In His sublime abode;' No angel ever hewed the stone Which formed that heavenly road. Not for His shining seraph’s ken God builded it—why, nay! ^ But for the sin-stained feet of men— This Whosoever Way! —Fay Inchfawn. 30. Strength in Unity “ The e my beloved brethren, be ye s t e a d f a s t , unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know'that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” ' (1 Cor. 15:58). In this dark hour the children of God should be drawn to Him in hu mility of heart with sincerity of pur pose, and bound together as brethren. A crisis is upon our country. A crisis is upon the church. Let us be big enough to be used of the Lord, putting aside all p e t t y differences, and personal feelings, with repentance in sackcloth and ashes, gaining the victory of faith through prayer.—A. K. Ramsey. 31. The Part of Waiting “Wait on the Lord: be of good cour age, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord” (Psa. 27:14). . It may seem an easy thing to wait, but it is one of the postures which a Christian soldier learns not without years o f teaching. Marching and quick-marching are much easier to God’s warriors t h a n standing still. There are hours of perplexity when the most willing spirit, anxiously de sirous to serve the Lord, knows not what part to take. Then what shall it do? Vex itself by despair?, Fly back in cowardice, turn to the right hand in fear, or rush forward in presump tion? No, but simply wait. Wait in prayer.... Wait in faith.....Wait in quiet patience. • —Morning by Morning.
