After unknowingly purchasing a Johne’s infected animal in the mid- 1990’s we saw the significant long-term risk that Johne’s disease could pose not only to our program but also to the herds and livelihoods of our customers. We immediately initiated an aggressive Johne’s testing program and have been a Johne’s certified herd since 1997. We are a level 6 herd and the first and longest standing certified beef herd in the state of Missouri. Our testing program has exceeded state and national requirements, and we have never had an animal test as a confirmed Johne’s carrier other than the original purchased female. To protect the bio-security of our herd and as part of the Johne’s certification process, FHCC has maintained a closed herd only bringing in outside genetics through frozen semen and embryos or animals from other high level Johne’s certified herds. However, in a recent effort to more rapidly expand the size of our program, we have also initiated a separate Johne’s Tested herd. This herd is maintained on a different land base independent of our certified herd. Like our main herd, these cattle are tested for Johne’s for your protection and ours. However, this herd has not been closed or tested long enough to reach a Johne’s certified designation. To clearly identify which herd animals originate from, we have added a Johne’s herd status under the birth date of each animal. This tells you which animals come from our Johne’s Certified Herd and Johne’s Tested Herd. Note that bulls from both Johne’s free herds are developed in the same feedlot pens. In addition, all of our partners in this sale are long established herds that, while not certified, have never had a Johne’s positive animal. All of these options provide you additional peace of mind compared to other herds that may not be aware of or monitoring for Johne’s. You may have noticed that all of our yearling and older cattle have a U-shaped ear-notch. Persistent Bovine Viral Diarrhea testing has also been a long-standing component of our herd health program with all FHCC animals tested free for BVD-PI. Taking a tissue sample from the ear is the preferred testing method. All two year and older females at FHCC are also vaccinated annually for Anaplasmosis. Due to an increasing incidence across the industry, we have recently added a Digital Dermatitis prevention component to our herd health program to protect our herd and yours. All new animals that arrive at FHCC are inspected and go through a routine foot bath upon entry. All animals in the sale including bulls arriving from the feedlot will also receive the same precautionary treatment. While these policies add cost and complexity to our program, we feel that they are worth it as they provide security for us while reducing risk and providing both peace of mind and significant value to our customers. The FHCC herd is under the supervision of Dr. Martin Kautsch, Quail Valley Vet Clinic, Jefferson City, MO, (573) 893-8621.
