Target Unveils Sustainability Goals

Retail giant Target plans to make 100 percent of its private label products environmentally sustainable by designing items that are more durable, and eliminate waste and encourage reuse by 2040. The retailer also plans to have 100 percent of the plas- tic packaging for its brands recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2025. Target said it is responding to growing consumer demand for more sustainable products and practices from companies. Within the 2040 time frame,Target is planning to be- come a net-zero enterprise, which means it will create zero waste for landfills at its U.S. operations and have net-zero emissions across its operations and supply chain. As it works toward this goal,Target has other bench- marks to reach even sooner. By 2025, all of its brands will use plastic packaging that is either recyclable, compostable or reusable. By 2030, its goal is to be the market leader for creat- ing and curating inclusive, sustainable brands and ex- periences, the company said. Starting this fall, the company will address single-use plastic bags as part of its Beyond the Bag initiative, which is looking to design retail bags that are less harmful to the environment. Seventy-two percent of U.S. consumers said sustain- ability is somewhat important or important when mak- ing purchase decisions, according to the results from the EY Future Consumer Index. The survey gathered information from 1,001 U.S. respondents and more than 14,000 global respondents in May. Thirty percent of consumers said they are spending more on products that are sustainable and better for the environment and 31 percent said they plan to increase purchasing sustainable products in the next 12 months. The goals Target announced build on its earlier ef- forts. For example,Target signed on to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in 2018 to commit to eliminating plastic waste by making it reusable, recy- clable or compostable. The company also has begun reducing its emissions and sourcing more of its power from renewable sources. Tekni-Plex Acquires Grupo Phoenix Tekni-Plex has signed a definitive agreement to ac- quire rigid packaging company Grupo Phoenix. Flexo Market News

A new Bobst MASTER D 1000 S multi-technology laminator has been installed at Amcor’s Sustainability Centre of Excellence in Ghent, Belgium. The machine will be used in the development and testing of new in- novative multi-layer product constructions for Amcor worldwide. Amcor’s global R&D efforts to manufacture more sustainable flexible packaging is coordinated from its Sustainability Centre of Excellence in Ghent, in Belgium. In 2018, the global packaging provider an- nounced its commitment to make all its packaging products recyclable or reusable by 2025. Along with 250+ other leading manufacturers and brand owners, it has also signed the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, which aims to eliminate plastic waste and pollution at source. The company works with all parts of the value chain, from suppliers and customers to end users, to better un- derstand the carbon footprint of packaging and identify areas for improvement. The new Bobst multi-technolo- gy laminator will be central to this process. With more than 47,000 employees at 230 sites in 40+ countries around the world,Amcor posts annual sales of US$ 12.5 billion.Tracing its roots back to 1860, the company provides all types of packaging solutions for the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, health, home and personal care, and pet care sectors, along with a range of technical applications. The Sustainability Centre of Excellence in Ghent was established in 2019 as part of the company’s global ef- fort to stay at the forefront of innovation in packaging and succeed in meeting the 2025 pledge. Amongst the company’s innovations is the AmLite Recyclable range. These products reportedly elimi- nates the use of metallized layers traditionally used as barriers, making them more easily recyclable.Analysis has shown that the latest generation,AmLite Ultra Re- cyclable, can reduce a pack’s carbon footprint by up to 64 percent in a cradle-to-cradle comparison with foil laminate equivalents. It will allow brands to trans- fer products to recyclable flexible packaging across a variety of segments, such as coffee, snacks, dry pet food, and home and personal care, according to the company. As a part of the laboratory equipment in Ghent, the new Bobst MASTER D 1000 S laminator has been built to Amcor’s exact specifications. It is a more compact version than the standard models in the range, as there is no need for wide web conversion, and the running speed is lower to accommodate the unique working requirements.
