This past fall was the 30th Anniversary of the American Black Hereford Association that my family founded. It gave us all a moment to stop, and reflect on how far this breed has come. At the end of 2024, the ABHA was closing in on 600 active breeders across the country. Thirty years ago, that association had board meetings around my parents’ dinner table. What a journey it has been… and, in all reality, it has only just begun! We are extremely proud of the group of bulls we are offering in our 41st Production Sale. There are 55 homozygous black bulls, 57 homozygous polled bulls, and 29 bulls that are both homozygous black and homozygous polled. We continue to maintain the calving ease and maternal traits that make these cattle so desirable, while pushing the growth and carcass traits to even higher levels. We know first-hand how profitable Black Hereford sired steers can be — that is why we conducted the head-to-head comparison in 2022 with Angus sired steers that you can review on page 23. It is remarkable that despite record high prices, beef demand domestically and internationally remains very strong. That is because of the hard work our industry has done creating and investing in a better, more consistent dining experience for the end consumer. That work begins right here, with the genetic selections you will be making to bring home to your cowherd. Thank you for your confidence in our program. Welcome to the Ranch. BLACK HEREFORDS
EPDS EXPLAINED The EPDs in this catalog were provided by the American Black Hereford Association, and were current at the time of compilation. The ABHA now has their EPD calculations done by IGS, the largest beef genetic evaluation system in the world, combining performance records from 20 million animals and nearly 20 different cattle organizations including the ABHA. An EPD is the difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. They are reported in units of measurement for each trait (e.g. lbs., cm, etc.) The data used in this analysis is based on up to 20 generations of J & N breeding and thousands of head of cattle measured over 45 years of performance testing for growth, maternal and carcass traits. PRODUCTION EPDS CALVING EASE DIRECT (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. BIRTH WEIGHT EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. WEANING WEIGHT EPD (WW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. YEARLING WEIGHT EPD (YW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age. DOCILITY EPD (DOC): Docility EPDs predict the percentage of an animal’s offspring that are expected to score favorably (1 or 2) on a five point scale when compared to the offspring of another animal. They are expressed as a percentage with higher values being favorable. MATERNAL EPDS MATERNAL CALVING EASE EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births. MATERNAL MILK EPD (M): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected.
CARCASS EPDS MARBLING EPD (MAR): Predict the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score. BACKFAT EPD (FAT): Estimate the average differences that are expected in external fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between progeny of different animals. Expressed in inches at a given age endpoint. RIBEYE AREA EPD (REA): Predict the average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in square inches. SELECTION INDEXES Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where indexes come in. Through rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes. ALL PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature Angus cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability, and maternal calving ease are not considered in this index. Using API and TI, if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not use TI. If a bull has an API of 130 his offspring will generate $50 more than a bull with an API of 80. TI measures the increased value of offspring on feed. The higher the number, the more dollars paid when the are sold on a yield and grade basis.

• Lot 1 is out of a top performing cow, JN BALDEE 1872. She ranks in the top 1% of the breed for API. This 842H son is safe to use on heifers, as he is in the top 20% of the breed for BW. He is also in the top 10% for Marbling, the top 3% for API, and he ’ s homozygous black and homozygous polled.
• Lot 3 is out of a JN BALDER D403 daughter. D403 was one of several bulls purchased by a semen distribution company based out of New Zealand, and was used almost exclusively as a beef on dairy cross on dairy operations in that country. They found Black Herefords have 5 days shorter gestation than traditional Herefords, providing an extra 5 days of milk on average. This D403 grandson is deep bellied, long, and is homozygous black and homozygous polled.

• Y ou’ ve got to love the calving ease this bull brings. He is in the top 10% of the breed for CE, the top 4% for BW, and had an actual birthweight of 65 lbs. These are terrific t aits to combine with 8 42H’ s outstanding growth and carcass characteristics.
• This bull is really well balanced - the product of a pairing between his sire ’ s leading growth and carcass tr aits, and his dam’ s top notch maternal traits. He is long bodied, with a small head, black to the ground, and is homozygous black and homozygous polled.

• Here is an impressive yearling bull with a weaning weight ratio of 113. He is marked like a traditional Hereford, and he sports a big rump. In addition, he is homozygous polled, so his calves will not have horns.
• Lot 9 is homozygous polled yearling, and is an easy calving 842H son. He ’ s in the top 5% of the breed for BW, MCE, and API, and in the top 15% for CE. He has very solid carcass traits, too.

• This two year old is probably one of the best bulls in the sale. In the pen, he ’ s really impressive, with a splash of white across his face. On paper, he ’ s in the top 25% of the breed for CE, BW, and YW, the top 20% for TI, and the top 2% for API. He is also homozygous black and homozygous polled. This kind of performance shows how good the JN Baldee 1861 cow is, as she also raised the 861K herd bull we really like, and have used the last 3 years.
• Lot 11 is a homozygous black yearling, with good eye pigment. Many believe that dark eye pigment like this bull has, lessens the risk of issues like pink eye and cancer eye. We also think this bull has a nice shape to him, especially through his middle.

• Lot 13 has good structure, and nice curve to the shape of his ribs. This young two year old is homozygous black. A good calving ease bull.

• Lot 15 is out of a cow that turns 11 this spring. She breeds back every year, calving, raising, and weaning her calf on her own - the kind of reliability that you pay a premium for when it comes to farm equipment. This bull calf will have high fertility and libido, and he ’ s homozygous black.
• Lot 18 is the final 42H offered in this sale. He has good eye pigment and he has black legs and feet. He has a moderate frame size, and ranks in the top 20% of the breed for YW.

• Our carcass traits went to the next level when we began using 743J as a herd sire. He is one of the top Marbling Black Hereford bulls ever - at the time of publication, his calves have a 130 ratio for marbling. He also has one of the highest All-Purpose Indexes in the breed. In addition, he is in the top 2% of the breed for CE, and the top 5% for BW, so you can understand why we often reach for his straws when we A.I. heifers. • Starting off the 743J sire group is Lot 19, a really strong two year old that is homozygous black and homozygous polled. This bull maintains the tremendous calving ease and marbling of his sire, but adds a little more growth and ribeye size into the mix. This is one to watch.
• Lot 21 has traditional Hereford markings and is homozygous black and homozygous polled. He is ideal for heifers, ranking in the top 5% of the breed for CE and the top 3% for BW, as well as API.

• Lo t 28’ s maternal grandsire is the FB437 bull that goes back to some of our more recent embryo transfer work. His maternal granddam raised one of our herd bulls, JN BALDER 736J. There are terrific c ws throughout this pedigree. This yearling is homozygous polled.

• This is the two year old full brother to Lot 28. It ’ s interesting to compare the numbers, and realize that although the pedigree is identical, the EPDs are not. You get a little more calving ease from the younger brother, Lot 28, but more growth with this bull, the older brother. He is homozygous polled.
• A guy can get spoiled by these 859H sons, who consistently have lighter than average birthweights, and heavier than average weaning weights, and here is another one. This bull has great pigment around his eyes, and is homozygous black and homozygous polled.

He has strong, powerful legs, with a clean tall front, and he sets up well on all four corners. He is homozygous black and homozygous polled.
• Lot 39 was born a twin, and spent about a week as a bottle calf before we had a foster mom available for him. Everyone calls him buddy, and he is homozygous black and homozygous polled. This performance is not a one-off f or this bull’ s dam - her 3 calves have averaged a 113.3 weaning weight ratio. There are good maternal genetics at work here.
