On Thursday Nov 16th a rally and BBQ was held at DP World Fremantle along with all ports nationally in support of the DPW members currently on their 6th Week of protected action against this toxic employer. There was a great turn out by DP World and mem- bers from other sites. The TWU also came out in force to show support and solidarity as they are currently in their own struggles with this two bit outfit. Adrian Evans updated the members around the DP World bargaining process and the steps forward, with further speakers including Will Tracey, TWU Organiser Charlie Nichols and Kyle McGinn MLC showing their support. Kyle McGinn sacrificed his parliamentary attire by helping man the BBQ and keeping everyone fed and energised to keep fighting. It was a great turn out which sent a clear message to DP World “We are NOT backing down - We are United and Ready to keep on Fighting Until We Win!
Please read the attached Op-Ed piece written by Will Tracey (MUA WA Branch Secretary), pub- lished in today’s West Australian Newspaper, ti- tled “Maritime fleet will be crucial in disasters and for security”. This article highlights the critical need for an Aus- tralian-flagged and Australian-crewed maritime fleet to address the vulnerabilities faced by re- mote regional communities in Western Australia during natural disasters and to ensure our nation- al security interests are met. This is particularly significant for those regional centres and remote indigenous communities in the most isolated part of Australia – the Kimberley region of WA. It also supports the urgent need for the Austra- lian Government to collaborate with the WA Gov- ernment in a pilot program for the strategic fleet initiative. By taking action now, we can fast-track the availability of Australian-crewed ships to pro- vide critical supplies to remote areas during nat- ural disasters such as the wet that is about to be- gin in the north of the state. Furthermore, it emphasizes the broader impor- tance of this initiative for the nation’s economic and national security interests. The strategic fleet initiative has the potential to safeguard supply chains during local climate disasters and inter- national tensions that may threaten freedom of navigation. It is an opportunity for Western Aus- tralia to play a leading role in the revival of Aus- tralian shipping and protect its interests in both the short and long term.

The Union and our MSS have had a gutful of MSS Security’s EA negotiations and we have been ramping up PIA from November 3rd! To kick things off, our MSS members have 14 days of bans on D&A testing, and we are only just getting started as we are going to smash MSS until we land an agreement! Our members deserve better wages for the im- portant roles they play, and we won’t be cop- ping peanuts anymore!

WA Branch Organiser Brendon Brolly was up and down gangways visiting vessels last week in the Northwest. These visits were well received by the rank and file, giving important updates on the status of EA negotiations, the upcoming work in the offshore oil and gas space, as-well as the work the MUA is doing behind the scenes to assist in the revalidation of IRs and gaining sea time for trainees. Engaging with members on the job is a crucial part of organising the membership to ensure we are United and stand as one, not only through the current EA campaign but forever and a day.
