Wharfies Gather for a Day of Golf and Camaraderie at Capel Golf Club

A WORD FROM MUA MEMBER DAMIAN MORGAN The Wharfies Capel Golf Day was a blast. See Photo 1 – Damian Morgan, Tommy, and Brian—aka 'The Phan- tom'—kicking off the day with big grins. Brian’s health battles didn’t dampen his spirit; he aced 18 holes and chuckled at the 'Phantom Shield' trophy I had made up. He thought that was great as long as it wasn’t a memorial! The day went smoothy with Fremantle’s finest from DP World, Patrick, Qube, and Linx turning out 50 pla- yers – all the regulars as well as some new players. Watching the guy’s scramble for the limited number of golf carts was a sight to behold; typical Wharfies living up to their reputation – “I'm not walking or I'm going home”. Winners hailed from Qube – Paul & Anthony, 2nd from Patrick's – Ciaran & Gary, 3rd from Linx – Scott & He- ath, and 4th from DP World – Jason & Dane. The last place NARGA from Patrick’s went to Scaff & Coop's. These young guys suck at golf, but they had more fun than ever. I saved the last prize for Jason… we told a bit of bul- lshit story about him kicking his ball to improve his shot, using a dodgy handicap. Everyone knew it was a stich up but Jason – the look on his face was price- less.

Inaugural Shield and Light- Hearted Moments

The event wasn’t just about golf; it was abo- ut fostering connections and moments that would be cherished for a long time. Dami- an Morgan's creation of the inaugural shield was a pivotal moment, generating an at- mosphere of tradition and friendly compe- tition. The Phantom, known for his humour, lightened the mood by quipping about the shield, ensuring everyone was in good spi- rits for future events.

The Capel Golf Club recently played host to a vibrant and spirited gathering of the Fremantle and Bunbury wharfies for a day that combined friendly competition, camaraderie, and a touch of good-natured banter. The occasion was a golf day that saw teams from both ports showcase their prowess on the green grass while fostering a sense of community and unity among the players.

Fremantle Crew ’ s Triumph The golfing event was brimming with talent, with the Fremantle Crew making an impressive mark on the leaderboard. Topping the charts were Paul and An- thony, exhibiting their golfing finesse with a stellar score of 62 ½, closely followed by Ciaran and Gary at 62 ¾, and Scott, Heath, and Craig securing the third spot with a score of 63 ½. However, the day was not without its light-hearted moments as Cooper and Jamie claimed the NAGA title with a score of 103 ½. Outstanding Achievements Amidst the skilled players, standout performances were acknowledged. Ryan claimed the title for the Longest Drive, showcasing remarkable strength and precision. Meanwhile, Ciaran's precision on the green earned him the esteemed recognition for being Ne- arest to the Pin, highlighting the expertise and fines- se of the players.

Bunbury Crew ’ s Display of Skill

The Bunbury contingent also exhibited their golfing prowess with Ben and Cam leading the pack at 64 ¾. Following closely behind were Connor and Coen with a score of 65 ¾, while Tony and Rocco secured the third spot at 70 ¼. However, the day wasn't just about victories, as Richie and Ian clinched the NAGA title for the second consecutive time, demonstrating the spirit of good sportsmanship amidst the compe- tition. Vets and Their Remarkable Performance The Vets category saw an exciting turn of events with Peter, the Phantom, N Davis, and J Patience sharing the limelight as they finished in an impres- sive tie for the first position. Their outstanding skills and competitive spirit were evident, adding a layer of excitement and sportsmanship to the event.

MUA Leadership and Light- Hearted Moments

Amidst the friendly competition, the MUA WA Branch Leadership Will Tracey, Doug He- ath and a lot of others orchestrated a playful moment, adding a dash of humour and jest to the day. Accusing an honest player (Or- ganiser, Jason Lipscombe) of cheating led to a delightful reaction, fondly referred to as “the Bite” by the official, earning Jason the playful nickname “steel caps.” Such mo- ments of humour and camaraderie added a special flavour to the day, making it not just a competition but a celebration of strength. The Wharfies Golf Day at Capel Golf Club wasn’t just about swings and putts; it is a testament to the spirit of unity, camaraderie, and good-spirited competition among all the brothers. As the day concluded, it left a trail of laughter, memories, and a shared love for the sport, setting the stage for more such lively gatherings in the future.

The return trip was filled with plenty of drinks and laughs, sealing a damn good day.

The buzz afterward? "Count me in next time!" And Will Tracey, they're itching to see you on the course next year. Don’t bail on us! This golf day was more than swings and putts; it was about us—united, tough, and proud Wharfies. Can't wait for next year’s round of banter and birdies.
