Create a Literacy-Rich Home Environment for Every Child

GRADES PREK–8

Research shows that access to books in the home is one of the strongest predictors of educational achievement. 1 When Books Go Home, Achievement Goes Up

5 Books

25 Books

The likelihood of being on track in literacy and numeracy almost doubled if at least one book was available in a student’s home. 2

Reading just five books during the summer can prevent a decline in reading achievement. 1

A child who comes from a home with 25 books will, on average, complete two more years of school than a child from a home without any books at all. 3

Scholastic has helped districts across the nation build home libraries that lead to measurable gains in the classroom. We Have What Home Libraries Need

What We Do We build Take-Home Book Packs that are engaging to read and proven to work. 78% of students maintained or increased their reading levels over the summer when they were provided with Scholastic take-home books and other learning opportunities. 4

How We Do It Every year, our literacy experts review hundreds of new books. Using data from Scholastic Book Fairs and Clubs, we select the most recognizable characters and relatable stories to build and refresh our take-home packs for maximum engagement .

Why We Do It We believe that home libraries can do more than drive reading skills. They give children a window to the world and strengthen families’ connection to their school and to each other .
