A new addition to Ireland’s Electrical Awards for 2024, Rising Star was awarded to Sean McLoughlin, described by judges as a credit to himself. Sean has worked at Gmac Electrical since leaving school, always knew he wanted to be an electrician since he was a small child and has never wavered from that goal. According to his employer, Sean is methodical, trustworthy and capable, with excellent problem-solving skills. He displays professionalism when working with colleagues and clients alike, going above and beyond to bring projects to a successful conclusion. An ATU Sligo student, Sean is described by his tutor as “a hardworking, dedicated, passionate apprentice, who is always willing to learn and develop new skills”. This talented individual was nominated by his lecturers at ATU Sligo to compete in a WorldSkills preliminary round at ATU Sligo in the skill of Electrical Installations. Sean won the round, competing against six other apprentices. He went on to win his next round at the Ireland WorldSkills final in September 2023 and will now compete on the WorldSkills stage in Lyon, France this coming September, competing against apprentices from 20 other countries around the world. Sean has also achieved distinctions across the board in his qualifications at Tullamore ETB and Sligo ATU and hopes to continue that streak during his current college term in ATU Sligo.
AJ Reynolds is recognised by his employer, and his tutor at TUS Limerick, as a brilliant all-rounder with strong organisation, time management and teamwork skills. Constantly working to develop his skills, his passion is M&E systems for sustainable, carbon-neutral buildings. AJ impressed the judges with his ability to quickly grasp complex concepts and apply them effectively. He embodies the qualities of a well-rounded apprentice and is highly organised, punctual and takes pride in presenting himself and his work to the highest standards. Judges said these attributes are a testament to his professionalism and commitment to excellence. AJ has worked hard in the last year of his apprenticeship to develop skills, whether it’s wiring and understanding circuitry or installing containment for cables like trays and conduits. AJ’s passion for sustainable building practices set him apart in this category. His eagerness to deepen his understanding of sustainability and renewables through further education is a testament to his commitment to ongoing learning and growth. This September, AJ is furthering his education with a night course to deepen his understanding of sustainability and renewables for future design. This Apprentice of the Year is eager to expand his knowledge and contribute to even more projects.
