New rules for smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms in private rentals introduced in Northern Ireland

Ireland’s Department for Communities
has published a summary report following a 12- week consultation on new regulations for smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms in private rented properties. Part of the Private Tenancies Act (NI) 2022, Section 8, the new regulations set minimum standards for the type and placement of alarms in private rented properties. These include: • At least one smoke alarm in the room most frequently used for daytime living and in every hallway/landing on each floor • A heat alarm installed in every kitchen • A carbon monoxide alarm in any room or hallway containing a fixed fuel-burning appliance or flue Key dates • New tenancies granted on or after September 1, 2024 must comply with the regulations from the start of the tenancy. • Existing tenancies granted before

SkillELECTRIC 2024 heats up with regional events
Southern Regional College (SRC) apprentice Jonathan Gough has triumphed in the Electrical Installation category of the SkillBuild NI Regional Competition. Jonathan is now shortlisted for the UK National Final of SkillELECTRIC 2024, to be held in Milton Keynes this November. A fellow SRC student, Adam Skelton, came second in the category, with Geoff George from Northern Regional College awarded third place. SkillELECTRIC, part of the WorldSkills UK network, is the electrical industry’s premier skills competition, celebrating the best practical and technical skills from across the UK. The NI Regional Competition was hosted by the Construction Industry Training Board NI (CITB NI) in partnership with CITB (GB) and South West College at the Technology and Skills Centre in Killyhevlin, Enniskillen on May 21. Sam Donaghy, Head of Technical Advice and Practice at NICEIC, said,
“We’re proud to be key delivery partners of SkillELECTRIC. These events provide an excellent platform for supporting the future generation of skilled electricians. “Apprentices and students have an amazing opportunity to showcase their abilities and gain valuable experience in a competitive environment. It will be exciting to see how participants progress through the competition.” Regional qualifier heats were held across the UK over May and June. Competitors are tested through a series of practical challenges encompassing various electrical installation tasks. Qualifying participants will then have the chance to compete in the final, with finalists set to receive prizes generously provided by NICEIC. The highest-scoring competitors from all UK heats will receive invitations to compete at the SkillELECTRIC UK
September 1, 2024 have until December 1, 2024 to comply.
