The Aulsbrook Pizza Tradition
THE FRIDAY PLAN MY WIFE AND I KEEP EVERY WEEK
My wife and I don’t typically keep up with national food holidays. But, since October is National Pizza Month, I think you should know about a tradition we started quite some time ago. Alison is a great cook and prepares dinner a lot throughout the week. We make it a point to eat together at the end of the day, share our meal over a conversation, and compete with “Wheel of Fortune.” We also love breaking bread with family and friends at our table. We take pride in our home being a place where people feel welcomed. However, at the end of the week, we begin our tradition. Each Friday night, we eat out at a local pizza restaurant. If we don’t feel like going out, we order and pick up, but it is always from someplace different. We love this tradition because we learn more about the community by trying new places. A planned event each week gives us scheduled time together to do something unique and fun. I often ask my wife, “How can there be so many different pizza joints?” We joke that we could have our own Food Network show visiting pizza places around the metroplex and popular vacation spots. Alison and I always find ourselves “rating” the crusts. We spend a lot of time discussing whether a crust was good or bad and what stood out in the pie.
Last Friday, it really felt like we had a pizza show when Alison surprised me with a birthday dinner at Delucca Gaucho Pizza and Wine in Fort Worth. This restaurant is equivalent to a Brazilian steakhouse, but with pizza! If you don’t know, a Brazilian steakhouse is a cross between a buffet and family-style dining, where all food is one price but brought directly to your table. We tasted many unique pizzas, and the atmosphere was fun. I encourage all of you to check it out. If you and your family are looking for other local pizza spots, you should check out Old School Pizza in Arlington, owned by some of our friends (it’s a dive, so go with that in mind). Other great spots in our area include Coal Vines in Southlake, Eno’s in Bishop Arts or Cypress Waters, Covino’s, Olivella’s Fireside Pies, Grimaldi’s, and the 67-year-old Campisi’s Egyptian Lounge in Dallas. Mama’s in Fort Worth is also a great option if you’re looking for a game-day spot. There is nothing like a cheesy pizza with all the custom toppings to go along with a sporting event. The next spot we plan to try for our tradition is Serious Pizza. Alison wants to go there for her birthday soon, and they are famous for their 30-inch New York-style pizza. We can’t wait to go to one of their locations and experience their huge pizza slices or see their dough-throwers making the pies. If you or your family don’t have a tradition like ours, I encourage you to start something! Whether you go out once a week or monthly, it’s a great way to connect with your community and the ones you love. You might find it fun, and what better time to start a pizza tradition than now, with football season here!

Technology was created to make our lives easier, and though it simplifies our daily routines, it can be a hassle to maintain — especially if there are cords involved. Keeping the power flowing to multiple devices requires a plethora of cords that can get tangled and annoying. Also, as time goes by, cords may break or simply stop working. Organizing and preserving the quality of your electronics is the best way to extend their longevity, and with these tips, you can save a few headaches along with some money. TIDY UP YOUR CORDS. When you have tons of cords and cables attached to your desk and power strips, they can become a tangled mess. You end up pulling the wrong cord because they all look the same, and it’s a pain to figure out which is which. A great way to fix this is to use binder clips! You can clip them onto your desk to keep cords separate and in one place. Take it up a notch by using colored/patterned binder clips. Assigning specific colors to certain cords lets you find the one you need at any moment. PROTECT YOUR CORDS. Smartphone and laptop chargers aren’t cheap by any means. Since we use them so often, the cord that attaches to the device is susceptible to fraying and breaking. If you have some painter’s tape lying around, take a small piece and wrap it around the cord close to the connectors on both sides! The tape acts as a brace and keeps your charger cord sturdy. ORGANIZE EXTRA CABLES AND CORDS. If you’re like most people, you probably have a bag or box of tangled wires and cables somewhere. It can become an organizer’s worst nightmare, but there’s a better way. First, find an old shoe box and several empty toilet paper rolls. Then, place the rolls upright in a shoebox, wrap each cord up separately, and place them inside the rolls (one per roll) to keep them separate but together. Maintaining our electronics, especially the cords, allows our technology to continue working for us without worry or breaking the bank. Try these hacks and watch how untangled your cords and life can be! 3 TIPS TO MAINTAIN YOUR ELECTRONICS TANGLED UP IN CORDS?
WHEN DOCTORS FAIL TO MEET STANDARD OF CARE
Are You a Victim of Malpractice?
Visiting a doctor can be frightening, especially when it comes to diagnoses or surgery. But what happens if something goes wrong? Or, how do you know when something went wrong? When doctors fail to meet the accepted standard of care, it is called medical malpractice or negligence. Let’s look at common examples of medical malpractice and the specifications of a malpractice case in Texas. COMMON EXAMPLES OF MEDICAL MALPRACTICE Patients entrust themselves to their doctors and expect to be treated with a certain standard of care. When that standard is not met and poor medical treatment results, they become victims of medical malpractice. But what qualifies? Surgical Error: Your doctor (or their staff) commits an error during surgery that harms you. This includes a doctor performing an operation incorrectly, operating on the wrong part of the body, damaging parts such as nerves or internal organs, and leaving surgical tools inside the body. • These are a few common types of malpractice claims: • Prescription Mistake: A patient is prescribed or given the incorrect medication or dosage. If health care providers administer too much, too little, or the wrong medication, the patient is a victim of negligence. • Failure to Diagnose or Misdiagnoses: Your doctor fails to diagnose a condition or diagnoses the incorrect illness. This error can stop the patient from receiving the proper treatment or cause them to undergo therapies they do not need. MEDICAL MALPRACTICE CASES IN TEXAS Filing a negligence claim in Texas is subject to a few conditions. First, victims have only two years to file a suit against a medical professional according to the statute of limitations. Also, Texas limits the amount of damages a person can receive. No matter what a jury decides, a victim cannot receive damages greater than what the caps instituted by the state allow. In Texas, damages are capped at $250,000 per defendant. You or someone you know may have questions about filing a claim for medical negligence. Sometimes, understanding when you’re entitled to compensation can be confusing. A seasoned personal injury attorney can help you identify and navigate a case, especially against doctors who employ legal teams with extensive experience fighting these issues.

You May Find Yourself in a Crowd This Autumn
4 Tips to Avoid Injuries at Large Events
For large events, it’s best to avoid flip-flops or sandals and stick with sneakers or boots.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CLOTHING. Just like your shoes, your clothing is also essential when staying safe. Try to avoid any garments or accessories that are too loose. This will help prevent anyone from yanking or pulling on your clothes, and your clothes won’t get caught on objects, thus creating a safety hazard. LOCATE THE EXITS AHEAD OF TIME. When you arrive at your destination, it’s best practice to identify the exits closest to you. That way, if an emergency arises, you won’t be lost in the stampede of people searching for where to go.
As autumn begins in Texas, more of us will start attending fall festivals, football games, fairs, and parades. Large groups typically accompany these events, and being around new people is always exciting. While these occasions can be a lot of fun, they can also be where injuries commonly occur. Stay safe with these four tips when you venture into large crowds this season. WEAR THE RIGHT SHOES. You’ll likely be standing on your feet for extended periods at large events. It’s important to pick shoes that are comfortable and fit correctly. Closed-toe shoes can help avoid blisters or cuts on your feet that can potentially become infected. Choosing a shoe that fits perfectly is also important if you need to run unexpectedly. You don’t want to wear footwear that can fall off, trip you up, or slow you down. Texas-Sized LAUGHS
If the event you’re attending is outside, take a moment to identify places where the crowd is less dense and perhaps easier to move through.
STAY HYDRATED. Standing for extended periods in the heat generated by large groups of people can impair your ability to regulate your body hydration. Texas is still in the 80s during September and the beginning of October, so beware of the toll the hot sun can take on your body. Alcohol consumption can also contribute to dehydration. While spiked cider is hard to resist at autumn events, remember to drink at least 16 ounces of water for every 12 ounces of beer or 4–6 ounces of liquor!
Stay mindful of yourself and your family members this fall to remain safe and avoid injury. Have fun!

This Belgian Malinois Needs a Cape
EVA’S STAND-OFF WITH A MOUNTAIN LION
A commonly uttered phrase among dog lovers is that we don’t deserve them. This comes from the fact that dogs often give their all to protect their owners, even if that means putting their own lives at risk. Dogs seem to be instinctively wired to protect their humans — and it’s more proof they really are our best friends. In May 2022, Erin Wilson pulled off at a roadside picnic area and headed down a path toward the Trinity River in California with her Belgian Malinois, Eva. As Wilson walked down the slope, the dog ran ahead. Suddenly, Wilson turned around and realized she was being cornered by a mountain lion. These attacks are incredibly rare due to the mountain lion’s reclusive and shy nature. In fact, since 1890, California has recorded only six fatal mountain lion attacks. However, recent drought conditions have made food scarce in some areas. Their preferred prey is deer, but these conditions probably made the sudden appearance of a slender woman look like an attractive option. The mountain lion growled and took a swipe at Wilson’s left shoulder. As it lunged at her, Wilson screamed and shouted for Eva. At the distressed call of her owner, the dog came running back to Wilson’s aid. Without hesitation, Eva leapt between Wilson and tackled the wild cat.
During the short tussle, the mountain lion managed to get its jaws around Eva’s head, but Wilson fought to free her dog by throwing rocks in an attempt to break its hold. When that didn’t work, she ran back to her truck and managed to wave down a passing motorist. With their combined efforts — and a crowbar and lots of pepper spray — they were able to scare the mountain lion away. Wilson,
though wounded, managed to carry Eva back to her truck and raced her to an animal hospital. Unfortunately, while Eva survived the initial attack, she passed away due to her injuries on June 8, 2022.
Wilson said she would do anything for her dog, and that day, Eva proved she had done the same for Wilson.
