The Alleynian 712 2024

tey is playing the lead at The Globe in Much Ado About Nothing . We eagerly await Angus Imrie’s appearance in the forthcoming Hollywood film Mickey 17 and, following his recent workshop with Al Pacino in New York, our very own Eddie Loodmer-Elliott in Johnny Depp’s Modi . Our Live Theatre programme has been a vintage one this year, with trips to see many Olivier award-winning shows, including Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Operation Mincemeat, Ocean at the End of the Lane, My Neighbour Totoro, and For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy, with Complicité’s revival of Mnemonic slated for the end of the academic year. Surely the highlight though was tak- ing a coachful of budding GCSE Drama and PE students from Year 9 to the smash-hit National Theatre produc- tion Dear England. Their infectious enthusiasm for the premier league production has undoubtedly played a role in our bumper GCSE cohort for September 2024!

With more than 50 projects taking place, embracing full productions, examination work and one-off workshops, it feels like we’re operating on the scale of a producing house, all running alongside the academic programme. Fortunately, we have an extraordinary team of teachers, who deliver unrelenting originality, invention and rigour to inspire, challenge and engage pupils on a daily basis. We bid a fond farewell to the unflappable Queen of Cool, Lucy Mackenzie, as she departs for Cambridgeshire with her young family. Her flair at Key Stage 3 and GCSE and her stewardship of the LAMDA programme have been exemplary. She manages every glitch and wrangle with calm professionalism – who on earth is going to tackle those spreadsheets now?! It is entirely apt that Lucy is overseeing the Lower School House Drama festival this year with the overarching theme of magic – she has certainly sprinkled her magic and charm over Dulwich Towers and will be sorely missed, not just by the Drama Department but also by the Common Room. ◉
