The Alleynian 712 2024

SENIOR CRICKET CAPE TOWN TRIP 2024 In the Cape Town sun of the February half-term, 30 pu- pils in Years 10, 11 and 12 played in eight cricket fixtures and enjoyed six different enrichment activities. There was no post-travel rest for the Dulwich cricket- ers as training began on the first day after our arrival in Cape Town. In the shadow of Table Mountain, the boys were put through their paces at Milnerton High School by coaches Adam Riley, Jimmy Davies, Justin King and Rob Craze in preparation for their upcoming fixtures. Friday saw pupils divided into two squads: one was welcomed by Durbanville High School whilst the other returned to Milnerton High School to play against the Gary Kirsten Academy. Durbanville High School provided an excellent challenge for Dulwich and ultimately came out the victors by 3 wickets, despite Ed Warren’s excellent return with the ball of 4 wickets for 19 runs. Kiran Slatter top-scored with a rearguard 46 against the Gary Kirsten Academy, but the opposition were too professional and strong and finished the match as comfortable winners. Whilst the results weren’t in our favour, there was plenty to look forward to over the weekend. Saturday started with an early wake-up to enable us to travel to Aquila Private Game Reserve, northeast of Cape Town. With great fortune, we were able to see four of the big five: lion, rhino, elephant and buffalo were out in force amongst zebra, giraffe, hippo, springbok and baboons. It was a fantastic morning, with each member of the group knowing how lucky we had been to have seen such wonderful animals. The day was to get even better as we travelled back to Cape Town to the famous Newlands Cricket Ground – one of the world’s greatest cricket stadia – to see the final of the South Africa T20 competition.

Donhead Preparatory School. The Year 6 squads also had an excellent season. Charlie Fletcher’s pivotal hat-trick for the U11B team against Dulwich Prep London was a moment to remember. The A squad were particularly successful, with comprehensive wins against Dulwich Prep London twice, St Paul’s Juniors and Donhead Preparatory School. Also, at the St Paul’s Junior 6-a-side tournament, the Under 11A team performed impressively, beating KCS in the final to be overall winners. INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM ACHIEVEMENTS Teams that stood out over the season include the U13A squad, who reached the quarter finals of the National ESCA competition, before losing to Whitgift, the eventual winners. The U14A squad won the LSCA County Cup, which means they have earnt progression to the U15 ESCA national competition taking place in summer 2024. The U11A team performed impressively at the St Paul’s Junior 6-a-side tournament, beating KCS to be overall winners. Outstanding individuals include, in the Junior School, Sam Count and Josh Jelbert, who played for Surrey Under 11, and Harry Bond, who was selected to represent Kent Under 11 against Middlesex. Roan Kennedy represented the Surrey Under 14 and 15 teams over summer 2023, and Max Count and George Gooderham played for the Kent Under 13 and 14 teams. Jacob Emler and Robbie Keaton played for the London Schools Under 18 team. I would like to thank all the staff across the PE Depart- ment and wider Common Room who make such a huge contribution to the cricket programme and to every pupil’s cricket experience. Their dedication to weekend and co-curricular commitments is unwavering, and we are hugely grateful for their expertise.
