The Alleynian 712 2024

H enry Yang and Jovian Yan, both Year 12 students, were selected for this year’s Sovereign Students Art Prize for London. Organized by the Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF), these awards spotlight the talent of secondary school art students, emphasizing the importance of art education. Henry was shortlisted for his captivating self-portrait Vestige [1] , which delves into the intricacies of identity through porcelain miniatures. Jovian was selected for his painting Blue [4] , which captures a tranquil moment amidst the chaos of everyday life. In addition to this achievement, Dulwich College students made a significant impact at the Young Art Competition, held annually at the prestigious Royal College of Art, raising money for Cancer Research UK. With over 7500 entries from across the country, the standard was inevita- bly high, so we were absolutely thrilled that Robin Samuel (Year 12) [7] clinched the first prize in Printmaking for Years 10 and 11, judged by Professor Chris Orr MBE RA. Robin’s evocative landscape etching, inspired by family walks in the Austrian countryside, caught the eye of judg- es, and he has been invited to a printmaking workshop at the Royal Academy – a fantastic opportunity. Henry Yang, also from Year 12, secured third place over- all in the Painting category for his captivating portrayal of clouds ensnared within a humble jar [2]. Furthermore, Year 12 students Aristou Meehan [3], Henry Ognev [5] and Tommy Wu [6] received high commendations in the Drawing category, adding to the College’s impressive tally of accolades. These achievements underscore Dulwich College’s commitment to fostering artistic excellence and providing a platform for students to showcase their creativity. As we applaud the achievements of Henry, Jovian, Robin, Henry, and their fellow students, we extend an invitation to all our Alleynians to explore the many opportuni- ties presented by national school competitions. These competitions serve as stepping stones to further success, offering a wider platform for students to showcase their talents beyond the College. ◉

Once again, the artistic ability of Dulwich College Art students has been recognised on the national stage, with budding artists winning in prestigious art competitions this year, writes Mary Jo Doherty
