by talented students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, who also gave a performance of Bach’s ‘Badinerie’ to help explain and exemplify typical features of Baroque music. At the end of the term, the Year 10 and 11 musicians went to the Apollo Victoria theatre in London to see the spectacular show Wicked . As part of the GCSE course, the students study the song ‘Defying Gravity’, so it is an invaluable experience seeing and hearing the song performed live. In addition to this exciting array of trips, our GCSE and A-level students are, as always, incredibly privileged to work with our visiting composer, Cecilia McDowall, and our Music Technologist, Isa Khan. Throughout the course of the year, those in Years 11 and 13 have been fortunate to have individual tutorial sessions with both Cecilia and Isa to discuss their pieces as well as working on composi- tional and production techniques. ◉ DRUM KIT MASTERCLASS FREDDIE REYNOLDS (YEAR 13) Earlier this year, the Music Department organised a drumming masterclass hosted by Daniel Hayward, a freelance drummer who has drummed for several West End productions and who had just come off tour with the Dreamgirls stage show. First of all, Mr Hayward played us a few of his show pieces and invited us to see if we could drum along to the rhythm. After this, a few of us volunteered to take part in a drum fill exercise where two people went head-to-head on two separate drum kits, each taking it in turns to play two bars of improvisation.
