This is a question that authors often don’t ask until after publication, which can be too late if certain objectives are being targeted by an author. For authors who are not interested in being stocked in bookshops, and simply want books available for purchase online for those looking for it or require international
availability, Print-on-Demand (POD) can be a good option. Books that are distributed using the POD model exist only as entries on online retailers’ websites, until such a time as a copy is bought by a reader. This avoids the need to print copies in advance, but it does limit the sales of POD books to online retailers as bookshops prefer the flexibility of sale or return supply. For authors wanting their books to be stocked by wholesalers and bookshops, POD-only publishing is not an option.
