cepting new technology but look at ways in can improve our products and how it can help them individually, by working harder and not smarter.” The ultimate goal, from the production standpoint, said DeMarco, is for employees to focus more on the pro- cess of what they are doing as opposed to only the task at hand. “Kevin and Kevin have instituted some great Key Performance Indicators for our business,” he said. “One was tackling improving our on-time delivery. We were get- ting some black eyes from clients from late shipments; so how do we improve that? We made significant procedural changes relative to tracking on-time performance.”

Another aspect of production that requires constant diligence is cost of poor quality, or COPQ. “Since the ma- chines are so automated,” DeMarco said, “we’d like the operators to focus on queueing up the next job, look at the job, look at the information that’s in the ticket and making that the information’s correct. “Data integrity is always a concern in manufacturing. It’s easy for operators to put information into the system that might not be quite right, which then filters down to the oth- er operators. So we question those things very seriously. Last year we had about $150,000 in cost of poor quality on $31 million worth of business. The goal this year was to cut it in half, to $75,000. The only way to do that is through focusing on process versus task. Get people looking and thinking instead of being just transactional.” Displays require extreme precision and engineer- ing has to be every bit as strong as the design. “We go through a robust testing program, so once we design it, we weight test it, make sure it’s going to hold up. So form, fit, and function is really important for us from that standpoint. We have a lot of displays that are complex, have multiple intricate design elements and must hold a great deal of weight.
