A NOTE FROM SYLVIA October is one of my favorite months—the vivid fall colors, crisp air, smell of dry leaves and the slightly slower pace of life. We pause to savor a cup of hot apple cider, read a good book and enjoy the Minnesota Orchestra on TPT, which will return later this month. You will also want to mark your calendars for a Sunday evening at home on October 16th when you can watch a triple feature of Masterpiece premiers: Miss Scarlet and the Duke , Magpie Murders , and Annika will assuredly be a night of entertaining murder mysteries for all of us at- home detectives. Another exciting release is Making Black America: Through the Grapevine . This four-episode series premiers on Tuesday, October 4 and is the latest documentary series by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The series chronicles the vast social networks and organizations created by and for African Americans. In the series Dr. Gates speaks with historians, politicians, and cultural leaders to tell the history of how Black communities have formed spaces for themselves—from all-Black towns and business districts to Black Twitter—throughout U.S. history. Many of you tuned in last month to watch Facing Suicide and its companion digital series on youtube.com/PBS . The Facing Suicide Initiative was undertaken with the goal of impacting real change by raising awareness of proven suicide prevention efforts. This initiative has continued with community outreach events in Minnesota, as well as nine other communities across the nation. I look forward to sharing more about the impact of these efforts with you in the coming months. In the meantime, I encourage you to share the digital series with those who struggle with mental health issues and their support networks. October’s programming reminds me of what I love most about TPT. Our offerings are diverse. We entertain, educate, and make an impact on social issues. Yet, we never waver in the quality of the content. Thank you to all our members who make this possible!
