Toyo Ink To Double Asian Adhesives Production Toyo Ink SC Holdings Co., Ltd., the parent compa- ny of Toyo Ink Group, plans to double the laminat- ing adhesives production capacity from the current level at its Malaysia-based subsidiary Toyochem Specialty Chemical Sdn. Bhd. Expansion work is now under way at the Malaysian site, with full operation slated to begin in the third quarter of 2023. Once in operation, Toyochem Spe- cialty Chemical is expected to serve as the mother factory of laminating adhesives to the Asian region. Increasing Demand At present, the demand for laminating adhesives, which are mainly used to coat multilayered films in flexible packaging structures, is expanding in use for retort food pouches and pharmaceutical pack- aging primarily in Asia, according to Toyo. This includes applications such as PTP (press through package) sheets, a common form of blister packing for drug tablets. Rising populations in countries across Asia are expected to further propel the growth of the retort pouch sector by about 10 percent over the next five years.

“If done correctly,” said Nick Harvey, Technical Director at Apex International, “ECG will achieve higher resolution print with high quality and up to a 50 percent increase in production time, 30 per- cent less ink cost, 90 percent less wash up solvent cost, less tape, and less anilox, moving toward a greener and more sustainable solution.” The Open House included the factory visit of the anilox manufacturing facility at Apex showcas- ing the design workflow by Esko, pre-press plate making by Dupont, and a sample produced on the Bobst M5 press. The objective of these designs was to demonstrate how quickly jobs can be changed over and set up when ECG is adopted. During the event, FlexoKITE managed to set up and print at production speed three designs on two substrates in a record time of 21 minutes 32 seconds. FlexoKITE is a fully equipped flexo facility that was designed and set up to provide a supportive base for the flexo industry in Asia. The Tech Cen- ter includes Esko’s advanced screening software, DuPont’s Cyrel fast thermal plate processor, and Bobst’s M5 narrow web flexo press, which is inte- grated with Apex GTT aniloxes and Flint’s UV Force ink system.

Avery Dennison Launches Direct Thermal Labels Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials has introduced a new direct thermal (DT) linerless label platform for variable information labels used in e-commerce, food delivery and pickup, quick serve restaurants, weigh scale, and transportation and logistics applications. By providing a DT linerless solution for these growing, technology-enabled applications, the company has reportedly eliminated the liner waste associated with label printing while offering con- verters a DT labeling solution that is said to reduce matrix waste and improves process efficiency and productivity. The new platform uses emulsion adhesives to support semi-permanent and removable applica- tions and ensures consistent adhesive and silicone coating, according to Avery Dennison. Plus, it’s 32 percent thinner than linered labels, and features up to 50 percent more labels per roll. Available through a flexible service model with roll widths from 4 to 60 inches, the platform reduc- es the number of SKUs converters must stock and eliminates die cuts by offering one roll for every label length. With more labels per roll, converters also benefit from fewer changeovers and higher productivity, said the manufacturer. FLAG Benefits From Labelexpo Appearance FLAG (Flexo Label Advantage Group) signed six new members during Labelexpo Americas, bringing it current total to 128 members. Among the FLAG vendor partners exhibiting at the show were UPM Raflatac, Acucote, a Fedrigoni com- pany, ACTEGA, QSPAC, Fujifilm, Label Traxx, Wikoff Color, Omet Americas, GMG Americas, Hybrid Soft- ware, CTS Industries, AV Flexologic, and Prati. FLAG hosted an exclusive event Monday, Septem- ber 12. Members were privy to a 90-minute round- table discussion, where converters discussed re- al-world challenges. JC McKay, VP of Business Development at FLAG, shared exclusive label industry data that was col- lected from label and packaging converters. During the Roundtable Event, FLAG also an- nounced that its next Annual Members Meeting will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah. As part of the An- nual Members Meeting, Traco Packaging will host the members’ tour. The company, which is a division of Traco Manufacturing, is based in Orem, Utah.

The technology aims to create a smoother and more efficient color conversion process for pack- aging and label printers, trade shops and premedia houses. This integration, according to the compa- nies, will ensure uninterrupted file processing and color conversion, without losing mission-critical metadata between systems. The new connector, according to the companies, will deliver benefits for customers using ArtPro+ and GMG OpenColor, including: • The creation of a standardized and automat- ed process for color matching and reseparation of multi-color image and vector data, eliminating man- ual work, reducing the risk of errors and saving up to 60 minutes of operator time per job; • As ArtPro+ can modify colors, it is now easy and quick to add file edits after conversion for Multi Color Process Printing; • Enhanced color precision on press through stan- dardizing color conversion using GMGs enhanced spectral color technology; • The ability to retain mission-critical metadata to deliver a seamless and highly efficient prepress workflow; and • Increased flexibility for printers through rapid and precise prepress setup, thereby reducing pres- sure on time and resources.
