Drupa To Focus On Sustainability by Greg Kishbaugh
F rom May 28 - June 7, 2024, the drupa trade showwill take place at the Fairgrounds in Düsseldorf, Germany. At the show, the touchpoint sustainability exhibition, taking up an area of 400 square meters, will be presented in partnership with the German industrial association VDMA Printing and Paper Technology.
The opening session is enti- tled “The Voice of the Customer.” Chaired by Ben Abray of Autumn Graphics and Kevin Bourquin of Cyber Graphics, it will feature a panel of Consumer Products Com- panies discussing their packag- ing-related challenges and provide insight into how the flexographic industry can deliver value by im- proving print quality, driving effi- ciency and delivering on consumer demands. The brand owners participating in the session are: • Dave McCoy, Instinct Pet Food
The touchpoint sustainability exhibit will reportedly pres- ent a variety of best-practice examples and solutions from the most important stakeholders for increased sustainability along the entire added value chain of the industry. The touchpoint sustainability will address technologies from mechanical and system engineering, particularly with regard to quality, process safety during production and sustainability. The role that digitalization and AI will play in accelerating the transformation process in the printing and paper industry and achieving economies of scale will also be examined. (Cont’d on Page 3)

How can energy and resources consumption during production be reduced? How can the use of mate- rial and printing ink be reduced to a minimum, how can inks of all kinds be recycled and how can finishing processes be implemented in an en- vironmentally friendly way? Ques- tions like these will being discussed at the touchpoint sustainability and presented using a variety of use cases. Increased efficiency, digital solutions, climate neutrality and circular econ- omy are only some of the develop- ments that will be highlighted. They promise new business models and will shape the future of the global print and paper industry. In other drupa news, the company has released its 9th Global Trends Re-

port. The report concludes that the global print in- dustry shows increasing confidence across almost all markets and regions despite economic headwinds. Globally, 32 percent more printers and suppliers described their company’s economic condition as “‘good” compared with those reporting it as “poor”.

“‘The Voice of the Customer’ is a rare opportuni- ty for FTA members to hear brand owners discuss their packaging-related challenges,” said Abray and Bourquin. “Their focus will be on quality, sustain- ability and efficiency, with the understanding that flexographic packaging production is not the only part of their packaging supply ecosystem.” FORUM & INFOFLEX 2024’s CPC spotlight con- tinues after its opening session. Through FTA’s CPC Awareness Campaign, which boosted brand owner attendance at the Association’s Fall Technical Con- ference 2023 by 200 percent, representatives from Consumer Product Companies will be a major com- ponent of the events. Beontag Plans Major U.S. Expansion Beontag, a manufacturer of pressure sensitive ad- hesives and smart tags such as RFID and NFC, has agreed to take on a 200,000-square-foot industri- al building in Dayton, Ohio, for a manufacturing facility to support the company’s North American expansion. Beontag is set to invest more than $60 million in equipment, machinery, and tenant improvements over the next two years. Boentag has committed to creating around 200 new jobs at the facility, which is expected to be fully operational by August 2024. The factory will allow the scale up of the pro- duction volumes through the utilization of more productive machinery, such as coaters, slitters, and sheeters for roll label stock, servicing the roll con- verter market. In addition, RFID and linerless oper- ations will be integrated in the same building. Beontag’s investments in the North American mar- ket began in September 2022 with the acquisition of Technicote, a company specializing in the pres- sure sensitive adhesives market for more than 40 years. In addition to the new Ohio facility, Beontag will soon begin the process of merging Technicote, which will become Beontag US.

Flexographic printing among packaging printers remains resilient. Globally, the digital adoption – printers generating more than 25 percent of their turnover from digital – is growing from 26 percent in 2014 to 29 percent in 2023. Capital expenditure fell during the Covid pandemic, recovered a little last year and increased this year with 27 percent more printers investing more in 2023 than those who reduced expendi- ture; a better global figure than in any year since 2017. An even higher invest- ment rate is forecast for 2024, by both printers and suppliers. Strong industry growth forecasts must of course be put in relation to econom- ic challenges, with the risk of recession or at least damaging inflation now out- weighing the impact of the pandemic and a wide variety of specific regional so- cio-economic concerns.
