Welcome!
Message from the ADAVB Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee Chair The CPD Committee is pleased to present the 2025 ADAVB CPD program. Topics have been carefully considered to include many new topics to assist you to continue to build your knowledge and skills. This year the program has been developed and grouped into dental specialties allowing you to focus on certain aspects of dentistry, as well as practice and patient management. We have identified topics that would suit Recent Graduate members that together form a well-rounded year long program. There are also many topics that would interest dental hygienists, oral health therapists, dental assistants and practice managers.
In addition to the traditional program, we have also developed a structured case discussion session working with some dental specialists. This session will allow participants to implement knowledge and techniques learnt from our courses into their own practice and then bring your own case back to discuss with colleagues and dental specialists. You can register to attend this session when you subscribe to any of the 2025 courses – get in early to avoid missing out as the session is limited in spots to allow everyone the opportunity to interact well with the specialists. We look forward to seeing you at the courses.

DATE
TIME
The most photographed generation is currently growing before our lenses. Interrogation of childhood development is occurring more now than ever, with figuratively infinite reels of photos being checked back and forth constantly. In combination with the modern-day advent of unlimited access to information – good, bad, and ill-conceived – currently the pressure to understand the development and management of early malocclusions is growing endlessly. We should all be confident and comfortable sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Shared management of the medically complex paediatric patient Presented by Dr Lochana Ramalingam As the number of paediatric patients living with special healthcare needs increases, dental practitioners play a vital role in providing them with the appropriate dental care and prevention. There is a well-established link between oral health and overall health. Evidence suggests that access to timely dental care is a challenge for these families. Therefore, close collaboration between the medical teams, dental practitioners in the community and hospitals is paramount.

Orthodontic retention: a team approach Presented by Prof Marie Cornelis Orthodontic retention protocols changed extensively over time. Nowadays, the use of long-term retainers is widely accepted. However, retention procedures diverge substantially from one geographic area to another. To prevent orthodontic relapse, orthodontists need failure- free retainers that help minimising post-treatment changes, without causing unwanted and detrimental side effects. Which evidence do we have? The lecture will place these questions into perspective based on an overview of the literature.

Principles of dentoalveolar extractions Presented by A/Prof Seth N Delpachitra and Dr Anik Saha This workshop is designed for early career dental professionals, to provide a core curriculum introducing the pearls, pitfalls and practicalities of exodontia. A heavy emphasis is placed upon surgical principles because in clinical practice, one will regularly come across situations in which a clinical problem is difficult to manage, or no clear path forward is available. In these situations, it is paramount to fall back on the basic tenets of surgery in order to provide best outcomes and appropriate patient care.

Orofacial pain – past, present and emerging Presented by Dr Vidya Iyer and Dr Tami Yap Orofacial pain conditions, including temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), primary headaches (neurovascular), neuropathic pain, and idiopathic pain conditions, can often mimic toothache, obscuring their true complexity. In this talk, we will explore the accumulated wisdom that has shaped our understanding of these conditions and the past reliance on ineffective and potentially addictive treatments like opioids and benzodiazepines. We will explore case-based discussions that highlight how delayed diagnosis, and inappropriate surgical or medical interventions can further complicate the presentation of these pain conditions. The talk will also examine the exciting horizons ahead, exploring emerging trends in diagnosis, targeted therapies and multidisciplinary approaches.
