We welcomed BREIS into school to talk to our Year 9 and 10 students during book week. BREIS stands for Brother Reaching Each Inner Soul and he believes his purpose is to inspire, educate and educate people through his music. He is a Hip Hop Lyricist, Rap Artist, Poet and Author who spoke to our students about the power of voice and the impact of our words on ourselves and others.
In the assembly, he talked about the fascinating history of Hip Hop, his story about becoming a Rap Artist and the positive influence it has had on his life as well as giving a brilliant live performance of some of his raps which the students loved! Two classes also had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with BREIS. We have had such positive feedback from the students who really enjoyed his visit.
Safaa from 9FHE said: “It was a pleasure to take part in a rap verse writing workshop with rap artist BREIS. The session was interactive and enabled me to craft my own rap verses using devices like rhyming couplets, similes and alliteration. In our assembly in the morning BREIS spoke about the impacts of the words we exchange with others as well as those we tell ourselves.”
Our students were left inspired by BREIS’ talk and a couple have shared their own rap verses they have written:
When you look in the mirror, who do you see? The person you are or who you pretend to be Take off the mask and always be true And all people can see is the real you Why are you rude and why do you lie? What’s the worst that could happen if you didn’t hide?
Words can be empowering and lifting But they can be like spears, leaving you hurting Why be mean to others when kindness is free? Understand: respect has no fee So choose your words wisely, don’t spit them out free The world will change and you will see
