By the 17th century, live potted flowers and plants were still seen as a status of “wealth.” With no central heating or air conditioning, homes were drafty and cold. Only the rich were able to afford expensive greenhouses or conservatories to grow plants and house them during the colder months to keep them alive. By the Victorian Era of the 1800s, potted house plants were becoming more popular on a broader scale. With homes becoming more insulated and easier to heat, live house plants and flowers began sprouting up not just in the homes of the wealthy but also in middle-class homes.
By the 1940s, as mid-century modern inte- riors became popular, everyone seemed to join the craze of featuring live potted flowers and potted plants in their homes. Now that keeping plants inside was affordable, many people began this practice as a hobby and as a symbol of beauty. In the 21st century, potted house plants have become more acces- sible than ever. There are stores dedicated just to potted plants, and you can also order just about any live plants and flowers online and have them shipped to you.
