NSLHD’s Safety and Quality Newsletter provides information on new and upcoming activities, programs and initiatives within the district that aim to improve the safety of our patients and the quality of our care.

It was wonderful to share NAIDOC Week celebrations with so many of you. Thank you to the dancers from Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands who shared their culture with us, and to the NSLHD Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Service for helping plan such a great celebration. I would like to congratulate Michelle Barry and Adrienne Stern on winning the “ Supporting our People & Culture Award ” at the 2023 NSLHD Quality & Improvement Awards for the Kindness Kits Program. The kits are available to managers to give to staff when needed, for whatever reason, and can be an opportunity to open up a conversation. The kits are available from Michelle Barry. The time has come for me to say farewell to Ryde, and Heather Gough will be returning as General Manager on 25 July. Thank you for your support over the past five months. I have learned that the culture at Ryde Hospital is one of its greatest strengths, with the heart of a community hospital while providing first class pa- tient care. The care and compassion that staff show both for their patients and their colleagues is heart - warming. Welcome back Heather, and I wish you well for the future.

NAIDOC Celebrations

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in July each year to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achieve- ments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is an opportunity for all of us to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continu- ous living cultures on earth. The theme for NAI- DOC 2023 is For Our Elders Ryde Hospital celebrated on 4 July 2023 in front of Denistone House with a traditional Smoking Ceremony and indigenous performances, fol- lowed by some light refreshments. Bobbi Lockyer, a proud Ngarluma, Kariyarra, Nyulnyul and Yawuru artist, and winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC Week Poster Com- petition for 2023 says: “ Where there is knowledge there are our Elders. Our Elders paved the pathways for us, taught us our knowledge, our history, they passed down their art, stories and wisdom. Our Elders are the foun- dation of our communities and role models for our children ”. ( See photo gallery for more images)

Redevelopment at Ryde

Staff farewelled The Chattery in early July with a barbeque and opportunity to write a goodbye mes- sage on the walls. The early construction works are progressing well with Building 11 (Wardspersons and Environmental Services), The Chattery and Community Aged Care and Rehabilitation Service (CAReS) buildings now empty and ready to be demolished to make way for new hospital buildings. At the end of July, the CAReS team moved into the refurbished Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre. CAReS is a community and outpatient rehabilitation and aged care service providing medical assess- ments, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work and speech pathology. The CAReS team run Parkinson ’ s, frailty, hospital avoidance and memory support programs. The CAReS offices are located on Graythwaite 5 and the therapy spaces on Graythwaite 4 include a gym, multipurpose room and therapy room. The lounge and library on Graythwaite 4 have moved into new areas on the same floor. New spaces on Graythwaite 4 include an eHealth meeting room and dedicated office spaces for the rehabilitation medical staff.

Outside Lunch Areas As the redevelopment begins, outside areas for staff to enjoy have had to move. Access to the Chattery and adjacent outdoor break spaces is now unavaila- ble as of Friday July 14, 2023. The outdoor tables currently placed on the grass outside the Chattery have been moved to the Blue Gum Lodge. An additional table has been placed on the grass outside Medical Imaging / ED. Please see attached a map highlighting the new outdoor break spaces availa- ble staff to utilise.

Emergency department understand the pa- tients and refer the patient to the Dr and pro- vide the right treatment at the earliest. No need to sit in emergency for 10 hrs Nurses are extra caring. Treating patients with love and kindness that you won ’ t get it at the com- fort of your own home ( unbelievable ) Surgins are from heaven. There is no word to describe them. I am very grateful from Ryde Hospital and I am writing this comment in tears Thank you for everything The care I received from all the staff was excellent and I felt they were all really concerned for my well being and recovery Nothing was a problem for them even when they were busy I felt secure and well looked after during my stay The ancillary staff such as cleaners, wards men and food delivery people were also very friendly.

Friendly Triage in ED admission at Ryde Hospital, ward staff is proactive in addressing concerns, mindful also of importance of patient confidentiality; informative discharge process by ward pharmacist. JMO kept daily contact with updating of process & response to requests & concerns. We ’ ll definitely return to use its other services

The all staff from cleaners ,Nurses, Doc- tors all was amassing they looking not only after me for patent like own family mem- bers, want say thank you to all of staffs and God bless them.

Ryde CAReS about Sustainable Work Apparel

The Community Aged Care and Rehabilitation Services (CAReS) at Ryde Hospital is doing their bit for sustainable health service provision. Normally supporting older people in the community, the CAReS team have turned their attention to reclaiming unused or no - longer - needed NSW Government Baby Bundle bags for community clinicians to use on home visits. Since 2019, these bags are given to parents and caretakers of every baby born in an NSW hospital. The CAReS sustainability project is designed to give a second life to the Baby Bundle bags, when they are no longer needed for their initial purpose.

2023 NSLHD Quality and Improvement Award Winner

Congratulations to Michelle Barry & Adrienne Sterne who won the “ Supporting our People & Culture Award ” at the 2023 NSLHD Quality & Improvement Awards for the Kindness Kits Program. This award aims to acknowledge the strong safety culture that under- pins NSLHDs commitment to deliv- er safe, reliable person - centred care, underpinned by the CORE values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. NSLHD Acting Chief Executive Mark Zacka said the awards are a special event to celebrate staff who make a real and positive difference to the lives of our patients, consum- ers, and their families and carers. Award ceremony was held at RNS.

Thank you to everyone involved in the recent launch of the NSLHD Nursing and Midwifery Em- ployee Value Proposition (EVP). The EVP tells prospective and existing employees what they can expect as part of our workplace culture. Following input from consultation sessions NSLHD has created an employer brand to communicate our culture to generate enthusiasm for the work our people do each day and attract talented peo- ple to come and join our team.

Farewell OT Unit Heads

At the end of July we are sadly saying goodbye to Michelle Williams and Katie Grattan Smith, our Occupational Therapy Unit Heads Michelle Williams joined Ryde Hospital in 2001 and has been leading the Occupational Thera- py Department for 20 years. She led her profession as representative on the Occupational Thera- py Council of NSW as well as Occupational Therapy advisor for the NSLHD. She also oversaw the Occupational Therapy service development at Ryde with the establishment of the equipment loan pool just one of her many achievements. She is recognised by her peers and other staff members for her client centred practice and as an exceptional leader. We wish her well in her retirement. Katie joined Ryde Hospital in 2013 as the first Occupational Therapy Team Leader in the newly opened Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre. In her 10 year tenure she has worked enthusiastically to implement rehab models of care that maximise therapy times and patient outcomes. As Unit Head she lead team and service development for the whole department with great success. Her energy, enthusiasm and support for staff, colleagues and patients have made a real difference to Occupational Therapy at Ryde. We wish her well in her future career.

sessment and/or discharge sum- mary. When there was any down time I would work on the audit which involved going through pa- tient cases to elicit positive reasons for admission. My favourite part of being an AIM at Ryde is … the amazing team at Ryde Hospital! I got along with all the staff, ranging from the consult- ants/CMOs to the interns to the nurses. They were all lovely people to work with and they all really made me feel at home from my first shift. Everyone talks to you and gets you involved, making you feel like an important member of the team. My key learnings as an AiM were … improving my procedural skills through the vast number of cannulas I performed. Knowing common ED presentations and what investiga- tions need to be ordered for them. Learning how to perform focussed ED histories and examinations. Writing concise discharge summar- ies which include all pertinent infor- mation. Learning how to perform consults with various medical teams.

The AIM role is … helping the medi- cal staff however we can. Responsi- bilities as an AiM at Ryde involved inserting cannulas, ordering investi- gations, writing ED assessment notes and discharge summaries for the ED consultants/CMO, and occasional- ly doing histories, examinations and consults. We also assisted in per- forming an audit during our down- time whenever the ED was quiet. A day in the life as an AIM looks like … I would arrive and make my- self known to the team. Any mem- bers of the team would then be free to ask me to help them with seeing patients. Often, I would accompany a doctor when they saw a patient and then I would stay back to insert the cannula and obtain bloods while they went off to write the notes and dis- cuss the case with the consultant. If it was very busy, then I would not accompany the doctor and instead perform cannulas and send off bloods to improve efficiency of the team. If there was a consultant or CMO who was familiar with me, I would accompany them and they would get me to take the history, perform an examination, order inves- tigations, and write up the ED as-

Ryde Hospital has been fortunate to have 2 Assistants in Medicine (AIMs) Jai and Joshua, for 2 months. They completed their placements at Ryde on 30 June 2023. We would like to say a big thank you to them for their hard work during their time at Ryde. We interviewed Jai about his experience.

Sustainable Ryde

The Ryde Sustainable Futures Committee are reducing the use of plastic bags.

The pink patient be- longing plastic bags have been replaced with brown paper bags. This is a wonderful initiative and another step towards a more sustainable future at Ryde Hospital.
