a driver of climate justice - ensuring that those most affected by climate change have access to the tools and knowledge to build resilience. “We’re not just designing for sustainability - we’re designing for dignity,” Piesik says. “Architecture must support economic resilience, cultural identity, and environmental intelligence simultaneously.” DESIGNING FOR THE NEXT SEVEN GENERATIONS What makes Hybrid Habitats truly remarkable is the way it integrates multiple disciplines - architecture, micro- biology, biomaterials science, anthropology, climate policy - and channels them toward a shared goal. It’s a testament to how academic institutions can incubate transformative ideas that have real-world impact. And for students, the experience has offered something rare: a sense of agency. In a time of mounting climate anxiety, Hybrid Habitats provides a tangible way to make an impact. Piesik hopes the work is only just beginning. “We’ve only scratched the surface,” she says. “This generation of students is deeply aware of the climate crisis and incredibly eager to design for impact. They want to build a better world - and they can. But we need to support them, fund them, and create the platforms where these innovations can thrive.” The initiative is part of a larger global movement - one that seeks to reorient the built environment away from extraction and toward regeneration. As Piesik puts it, “We took seven generations of indigenous knowledge and projected it into the next seven generations. We’re designing not just for today’s needs, but for the world we want to live in by 2100.” And that world, if Hybrid Habitats is any indication, will be one where architecture is as alive as the communities
فـي أماكـن مثـل الولايـات المتّحـدة. ولكـن فــي هــذه التعدديّــة تكمــن القــوّة. هــي التــي تضمــن الاســتمراريّة بيــن الماضــي والمســتقبل، بيــن التّقاليــد والابتــكار.” يُحاكــي المشــروع أهدافــا كبــرى مــن أهــداف التّنميــة المســتدامة للأمــم (مــدنٌ 11 المتحــدة، مــن بينهــا: الهــدف ومجتمعــات محليّــة مســتدامة)، الهــدف (الحيــاة 15 (العمــل المناخــيّ)، الهــدف 13 (الصّناعــة والابتــكار 9 فــي البــرّ)، والهــدف والهيــاكل الأساســيّة). ولكــن مــا يميّــز “الموائــل الهجينــة” حقّــا هــو أنــه يُعيــد تعريــف العمــارة كأداة فعّالــة للعدالــة المناخيّــة. فهــذا المشــروع لا يكتفــي بتقديـم حلـول خضـراء، بـل يضـع المعرفـة فــي أيــدي النّــاس الأكثــر تضــرّرا مــن تغيّــر المنـاخ، ويمنحهـم الوسـائل لبنـاء مسـتقبل أكثــر إنصافــا واســتدامةً. تقــول بيســيك: “نحــن لا نُصمّــم فقــط مــن أجــل الاســتدامة... بــل مــن أجــل الكرامــة. علــى العمــارة أن تحتضــن فــي آن واحــد القـدرة الاقتصاديّــة علـى الصّمـود، والهويّــة
إنّـه ليـس مشـروعا هندسـيّا بالمعنـى التقليديّ، بل جوقة فكريّة متناغمةٌ، تجمع بيـن العمـارة وعلـم الأحيـاء الدّقيقـة، بيـن علـوم المـواد الحيويّـة والأنثروبولوجيـا، بيـن السّياسـات المناخيّـة وفهـم الإنسـان واحتياجاتـه. وكل هـذه الأصـوات تصـب فـي سـؤال محـوري واحـد: كيـف نصمّـم مسـتقبل يصلـح للبقـاء؟ فـي زمـن تـزداد فيــــــه الحاجــــــــــــة إلــــــــى تغييــــــــــر المســـــار، تُقــــــــــدّم مبـادرة “الموائـــــــــل الهجينـــــة” دليـل حيّـا علـى الـدّور المحـوري الـذي يمكـن أن تلعبـه المؤسّسـات الأكاديميّـة في احتضـان أفـكار ثوريّـة قـادرة علـى إحـداث أثـر ملمـوس فـي الواقـع. وللطّــلب الذيـن انخرطـوا فـي هـذا العمـل، شــكّلت التجربــة رحلــة شــخصيّة عميقــةً، منحتهــم شــيئا نــادرا فــي عالمنــا اليــوم: إحساســا بــأن لهــم يــدا فــي تشــكيل الغــد. فـي عالـم مُثقـل بمخـاوف بيئيّــة متفاقمـة، جــاء هــذا المشــروع كبارقــة أمــلٍ، تقــدّم وســيلة ملموســة لتــرك أثــر فعلــيّ. تأمـل بيسـيك أن يكـون مـا تحقّـق حتـى الآن، الفصـل الأول فـي حكايـة طويلـة. تقـول: “مـا زلنـا فـي بدايـة الطّريـق”، وتضيـف بثقـةٍ: “هـذا الجيـل مـن الطـلّب يـدرك تمامـا خطـورة الأزمـة المناخيّـة، وهـو متعطّـش لتصميم حلـول تُحدث أثراً.
be fabricated locally using minimal infrastructure. No large factories, instead, smaller manufacturing units. Just palm fibers, natural binders, and basic tools. That means greater accessibility for vulnerable communi- ties. “The idea is to make this system accessible and practi- cal - especially in places like India, where women can produce the components themselves,” Piesik empha- sises. “It’s a smart, modular approach to construction that doesn’t rely on heavy infrastructure. The modu- larity not only supports efficient design but also en- ables decentralised fabrication, which is crucial for economic empowerment. Whether you’re in Gayatri, Liwa, or Madinat Zayed, women and men can build these systems locally using basic tools and materials - no factory required.” She adds that production can happen in home work- shops, garages, or majlis spaces - giving communities ownership and the ability to adapt the designs to their unique cultural aesthetics. Beyond functionality, this effort helps restore belief in the value of traditional knowledge. “I’m confident that communities will bring their own cultural layers to the work - elements that naturally differ from the perspectives of students in places like the United States. But that diversity is part of the strength. It creates continuity - between past and future, tradition and innovation,” says Piesik. The project aligns with multiple UN SDGs, including SDG 11 [sustainable cities], SDG 13 [climate action], SDG 15 [life on land], and SDG 9 [innovation and infrastruc- ture]. But more than that, it positions architecture as

مســتقبل الأجيــال السّــبع القادمــة. نحــن لا نصمّــم مـن أجـل احتياجـات الحاضـر فقـط، بــل مــن أجــل العالــم الــذي نحلــم بالعيــش ”. 2100 فيــه بحلــول عــام وإذا كان هـذا المشـروع يُشـير إلـى شـيءٍ، فهـو أن العمـارة التـي نعرفهـا لـن تبقـى على حالهـا. فـي عالـم الغـد، لـن تكـون الجـدران صمّــاء، ولا العمــارة معزولــة عــن الطّبيعــة، بل ستكـــــــــــون، كما حلــــــــــم بهــــــا مشــــــروع “الموائــــل الهجينـة”، نابضـة بالحيـاةً، تماما كما تنبض بهـــــا المجتمعـــــــات التي وُجدت . مـن أجلهـا.
