Hayatona – Our Life
يسـر القائميـن علـى المشـروع الإعـلان بـأن “سـلحفاة البانـك” لا تـزال صامـدة، وإن كانـت الأخطـار التـي تحـدق بهـا مـا زالـت قائمـة، وتتطلّــب مزيـدا مـن الجهـود الحثيثـة لضمـان بقائهـا. ومــن بيــن أنــدر الكائنــات التــي يوليهــا صنــدوق محمــد بــن زايــد للمحافظــة علــى الكائنــات الحيّــة اهتمامــا خاصّــاً، تبــرز ]، ذلــك Rhampholeon chapmanorum الحربــاء القزمــة [ النـوع مـن الزواحـف الفريـد الـذي لا يتواجـد إلا فـي مـالاوي. هــذا الكائــن المــراوغ، الــذي لا يتجــاوز حجمــه قطعــة نقديّــة معدنيّــةً، ولا يــكاد وزنــه يُذكــر، بــات يواجــه تراجعــا حــادّا مــن موائلــه الطبيعيّــة %80 فــي أعــداده، بعــد أن فقــد نحــو خـلال الأربعيـن عامـا الماضيـة، بفعـل التوسّــع الزراعـي الجائر. ورغــم صغــر حجمــه وصعوبــة ملاحظتــه فــي الطبيعــة، فــإن الخطـر الـذي يُهـدّد وجـوده لا يخفـى علـى أعيـن المختصّيـن. وبفضــل الدعــم الســخي مــن المتبرّعيــن، تضطلــع منظّمــة )، المعنيّــة بجــرد التنــوّع البيولوجــي مــن BINCO “بينكــو” ( أجــل حفظــه، بمهمّــة حاســمة تتمثّــل فــي تقييــم أعــداد هــذا النــوع النــادر وانتشــاره، فــي ســباق مــع الزمــن لضمــان بقائــه فــي البريّــة قبــل أن يفــوت الأوان. وعلـى الرغـم مـن تطـوّر صنـدوق محمـد بـن زايـد للمحافظـة علـى الكائنـات الحيّـة ليشـمل مبـادرات بيئيـة واسـعة النطـاق، فـإن برنامـج المنـح الصغيـرة يظل الركيزة الأساسـيّة لجهوده. النباتات والفطريّات، فلكل منها دور حيوي وفريد في الحفاظ على توازن النّظم البيئيّة التي تحتضن الحياة على هذا الكوكب. يُعرّف الصندوق الأصناف بكونها مجموعات متميّزة من الكائنات التي تمتلك خصائص مشتركة، ويمكنها التزاوج فيما بينها وإنجاب نسل خصب. ولا يقتصر هذا المفهوم على الحيوانات وحدها، بل يشمل أيضا
Over the past four years, conservation efforts have expanded to include head- starting some juveniles to a size that might be strong enough to survive in the wild. Today, we are pleased to announce that the Punk Turtle is still rocking, although significant challenges remain. Another extremely rare species supported by the MBZ Fund is the pygmy chame- leon [ Rhampholeon chapmanorum ], endemic to Malawi. This elusive reptile is facing a rapid population decline, with an alarming 80 per cent of its habitat lost over the past 40 years, primarily due to agricultural expansion. About the size of a one-dirham coin and weighing just a fraction of a gram, these chameleons can be difficult to spot. However, thanks to the support from generous donors, BIN- CO [Biodiversity Inventory for Conservation] is on a mission to assess the pop- ulation size and distribution of this rare species, with the goal of ensuring its future in the wild.

ولعــل مــن أكثــر القصــص إلهامــا فــي هــذا الســياق قصّــة ســلحفاة نهــر تحـت لقـب “سـلحفاة البانـك” 2019 مـاري، التـي ذاع صيتهـا عالميّــا عـام بفضـل مظهرهـا الغريـب والمميّــز. هـذه السـلحفاة، المعروفـة علميّــا باسـم ، تنتمــي إلــى ســلالة نــادرة هــي الوحيــدة فــي جنســها، Elusor macrurus مليـون عـام، مـا يجعلهـا 40 وقـد انفصلـت عـن أقـرب أقاربهـا قبـل نحـو كنـزا طبيعيّــا لا يُقـدّر بثمـن. ولـولا جهود مارلين كونيل، منسّــقة مجموعة “تيـارو لاندكيـر” فـي ولايـة كوينزلانـد الأسـتراليّة، التـي تواصلـت عـام مــع الصنــدوق طلبــا للدعــم، لكانــت هــذه الســلالة، علــى الأرجــح، 2010 فـي طريقهـا إلـى الانقـراض. كان طلـــب مارليـــن للحصـــول علـــى التمويـــل مصحوبـــا بصـــورة طريفـــة للســـلحفاة، تُظهـــر رأســـها المكســـو بطحالـــب خضـــراء علـــى شـــكل تســريحة “موهــوك”، مــع نتــوءات بــارزة أســفل ذقنهــا، وهــو مــا أكســبها لقـــب “ســـلحفاة البانـــك” عـــن جـــدارة. وينحـــدر هـــذا الكائـــن الفريـــد مـــن منطقـــة بوروبيـــن، حيـــث يصـــب نهـــر مـــاري فـــي مضيـــق غريـــت ســـاندي، ويخـــوض معركـــة بقـــاء شرســـة فـــي ظـــل تهديـــدات متزايـــدةٍ، تشـــمل الحصـــاد غيـــر القانونـــيّ، وتدميـــر الموائـــل الطبيعيّـــة، والتلـــوّث، والأنشـــطة البشـــريّة المدمّـــرة. وخــلال الســنوات الأربــع الماضيــة، اتّســعت دائــرة العمــل للحفــاظ علــى هـذا النـوع، لتشـمل برنامجـا يوفّــر رعاية لصغار السـلاحف حتى تكتسـب الحجـم والقـوّة الكافييـن لمواجهـة تحدّيـات الحيـاة فـي البريّــة. واليـوم،
thought to be extinct. “As a funder, being involved in the rediscovery of a new species or taxa, or finding a species not reported for decades, is a dream come true”, as explained by MBZ Fund Acting Director Gen- eral, Nicolas Heard. Whether it’s rediscovering a species thought extinct, uncovering a new species, or saving a species from the brink of extinction, the MBZ Fund has been at the forefront of these remarkable efforts. Each species has its own unique story, making the mission more rewarding. The Mary River turtle or “Punk Turtle”, became an internet sensation back in 2019 thanks to its unique appearance. Known scientifically as Elusor macrurus , this distinctive species might have faced extinction if not for Marilyn Connel, coordinator of the Tiaro Landcare group in Queensland, Australia, who approached the MBZ Fund for support back in 2010. The Mary River turtle, the only species of its genus, diverged from its relatives around 40 million years ago. Marilyn’s plea for funding featured a comically anthropomorphic image of the Mary River turtle sporting a Mohawk of green algae and spikes protruding from its chin, earning it the nickname “Punk Turtle”. This unique creature hails from Booroobin, where the Mary River empties into the Great Sandy Strait, and it faces a significant battle against extinction due to increasing threats from illegal harvesting and habitat encroachment to pollution and human activities.
